I do not really see a reason to complain about these FPS. If the computer is playing at least at 60, then it is doing what it is supposed to do.

Why? Because on the Helios 300, the screen max fps is 60, so it cannot show higher than that anyways. AKA Why you should use VSync to cap the FPS at 60 to put less stress on your system.

I agree with skelomorph, but not completely. Vsync doesn't reduce temperatures, but it can reduce tearing. It is better to run the game at your monitor's refresh rate.

I never played DOTA 2, but I have tried it for testing purposes and it is very CPU intensive game. The reason why the fps is dropping, is likely to be because of CPU throttling. Download HWiNFO and record the temperatures, while playing dota2 and then post the average and max temperatures of the CPU and GPU.

Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

  • Any FPS that the computer makes over 60 is extra information that is processing, which is causing the GPU to work harder. While you may see little to no difference in temperature, it is still extra work the computer is doing and you see no difference on the screen.

Vsync aligns the frames of the game to match the refresh rate of the monitor, so it doesn't just cap the framerate. It picks the best framerate plus adjusting the time in which the next frame will appear to match the refresh rate of the screen. For this the GPU has to render the frames first(for example 120) then V-sync only picks 60 of these frames, while the other 60 are just not displayed.

Cmon do you guys even realise that dota 2 is a competitive multiplayer game, you need to have at least 130-150fps to be competitive, 60fps is just not acceptable. Also this doesn't solve the main issue of frames suddenly dropping, I have experienced this myself in csgo, with settings set to lowest possible and at 720p resolution I experience fps drops from 200fps to 40fps that's just ridiculous, I do agree I won't have stable 200fps always but at least it should stay +/-30 from 200fps.

We are waiting for the OP to answer whether the CPU is throttling. 200 or 2000fps, when the screen is 60Hz it will be like 60fps. High fps is not needed in low refresh rate screens.

If the screen is a 60Hz screen, as these are, having an FPS that is higher than 60 does not really change the in-game performance. If you want 200 FPS to actually make a difference, you need the other hardware to make it possible.

It's great these laptops do have the power to push as much as they do, but if they throttled everything to 60FPS system wide, the only thing noticeable is the FPS number you look at. Worrying about FPS when the game isn't actual lagging is just something that takes your attention away from whatever you're playing. It is the reason why I gave up on paying attention to FPS counters because they honestly mean very little unless they are hitting lagging numbers (30 or below) which never happens on my 7 year desktop (even in newer games) or my laptop (except when you are on battery power, which you shouldn't game on and expect to run great anyways).

When FPS drop a decent amount, it can be a little concerning but is not surprising when FPS are in greater numbers. The higher the FPS, the more they fall when more graphics are required to be loaded.
