I bought by Aspire R5-571t on my birthday a year ago, but just yesterday it started sounding like the fan was grinding on something. I've heard complaints about the loud fan, but this has me worried that it might be something else...

If the noise you hear from the fan soud like it is grinding on something, then most likely it is. After time the plastic can change its shape a bit and reach the plastic cover of the fan. It can also be a bad bearing, making the fan shaking and hitting the plastic above or under it.
Always post the following characterisitcs of the device:
    -Model number
    -Part number(not required, but helpful)
    -CPU
    -GPU
    -Operating system

Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

This is the second laptop that it had happened to... The other one (a Sony Vaio VPSCE13-FX) lasted three years before that was an issue. Is this common?
