A1-180 constantly freezes

Hello,

I've been using a hand-me-down A1-180 for over a year now. The specs aren't spectacular and I used it to surf YouTube and browse the internet, so it inevitably crashed once in a while, and I'd have to do a forced reboot. After one of those crashes happened recently, I got around to downloading a RAM cleaner from the Play Store, and that's where the trouble begun (though it could be coincidental). To keep it short, it is now unusable for the most part, even after I managed to get it booted up for long enough to uninstall the RAM cleaner. Sometimes it freezes right after startup, other times it freezes after about ten minutes using it. A factory reset would be the obvious option here except I have two doubts about that - (1) what if it's down to bad RAM, and so what if it freezes up just as I'm resetting it? (2) how do I get my data out? I want to sync my history and bookmarks to Chrome but that isn't working because the tablet froze on me when I tried to do that just minutes earlier. As I type in fact, it has frozen just as I'm trying to evacuate some of my files to an SD card. I'd rather not pay for a repair – this will be my last Acer tablet for sure, and this is going to be sold if I get it working again.

    1) if RAM is bad, can fail to reset but if ROM is OK, it's worth a try
    2) if you have a google account and chrome is synced to that account, you will be able to have history and bookmarks synced on the next chrome installation

    Hi IronFly,

    Thanks for replying.
    (1) I have no idea if the RAM is bad, though. If it helps, (i) I always had a problem with the YouTube app's cache –– if it went over 260MB, any video I tried to play would stutter until I exited the app and cleared its cache. (ii) Also, I've just turned it off, and plugged it into a charger –– the battery charging screen displays just fine. Might the first be a sign of bad RAM, and the second conversely a sign of OK RAM?
    (2) I have a Google account, and I was signed into the account the whole time. I didn't think of syncing Chrome until the troubles began, and now...

    1) i think you can try to do a factory reset, by the way, the low RAM and crashing thing will be solved only for a while
    2) if you use Chrome on your desktop too (synced to the same google account), your bookmarks are already saved

    Thanks for your reply.

    (1) You're right. I did a factory reset about ten minutes ago and it's just crashed. I give up.
    (2) Managed to sync it, thanks.
