XG270hu going black for 2 seconds with freesync on.

I just got an Acer XG270HU monitor yesterday. I've found that when running a game and i have feesync on, I will start getting a random black screen for 1 - 3 seconds. The game is still playing fine in the background. This issue is happening in any game I play. If I turn off freesync, it stops happening. I also confirmed that the signal completely drops to the monitor only because I ran my sound through to the screen and the sound stopped at that point.

I'm running

Gigabyte R9 390 windforce

Intel I5-4670K 

8gb ram

Windows 10.

the display is hooked up through Display port. I've tried 3 different cables, including the one that came with the monitor, and still have this problem. 

I've done a clean uninstall and reinstall of the Crimson 17.6.2 driver.

I'm using dual screen with a DVI monitor which does not flicker when this problem occurs.
