My laptop is scheduled to be delivered in a few days.  Do any of you have advice on initial set-up in order to avoid mistakes?  Are the set up directions pretty straight forward?

BTW,  with units coming from Texas, they're advertising 6 days delivery time via FedEx.

Thanks in advance.

I don't see any reason to disable automatic update. But if you wish to disable it there is an easier way. In cortana type 'services'. Then a window will open with a list of different services. Find Windows Update, right click on it and choose Properties. Another window will open and then in general>startup type you can choose to disable it or set it to manual. In order to change it you have to stop it from running by just clicking on stop.
Always post the following characterisitcs of the device:
    -Model number
    -Part number(not required, but helpful)
    -CPU
    -GPU
    -Operating system

Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

There is nothing special that needs to be done at first start-up. You turn on the laptop and start using it staright away.

I recommend you to do update several things, which may cause some problems if outdated.

-BIOS - it can be found in Acer's website - https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/drivers

-Killer suite driver - download the latest version from killernetwork's offical website.

-Nvidia driver - you can download the latest version from Nvidia or the one from Acer's site(some people claim that the nvidia driver from Acer's site works better as it is optimised for this machine).

    Enjoy your new laptop.

I'd go through the settings menu and turn off all the telemetry stuff you can (you can look up some guides of what to turn on or off). Another thing I'd suggest is turning off auto driver updates in Windows, here are the steps:

    1. Press "Windows Key" + "Pause Break" key

    2. A window will open, look to the left hand side and click on "Advanced System Settings"

    3. Another window will open, click on the "Hardware" tab

    4. On the "Hardware" tab look for "Device Installation Settings" and click on that

    5. One more window will open, tick the circle next to "No" and then "Save Changes" at the bottom

Otherwise do what Ven said, update BIOS, drivers etc and then get to gaming!

F1X when I hit windows/pause break the only option listed is "settings",  can't find "advanced settings".  Sorry,  thanks

I'm talking about automatic driver updates, not Windows updates those are two different things. When you press win key + pause break key it should bring up your system info, on the left hand side of the window (not the right) you should see 'Advanced system settings'. You turn off auto driver updates so windows doesn't update your drivers with something not designed for your system. I would leave windows updates alone.

Thanks F1X but, when I push those two buttons all I get having to do with settings on the "left" side of the screen is the "settings" button.  There is no "advanced settings" tab that I can see.  Thanks though.

Alright, that sounds odd can you get a screenshot of the window that opens?

Try this instead: Go to start menu, scroll down to and click Windows System, click control panel and then click system. That should also bring you to the same window as I was saying winkey+pause break should have.

Sorry Flx, I though you are talking about the windows updates.

The way Flx tells you to do it works perfectly for me. Please look at the screenshot http://prntscr.com/gjmjo0

You can also access this by typing 'change device installation settings' in cortana and then a window will appear, asking you 'yes or no' and you just select 'no'.

Haha it's okay it can get confusing with the wording. The cortana way is 10x better thanks for sharing that

Most of the time when I look for something I just use cortana to find it. It can literally find anything Smiley Happy

F1X I retried your original method and it worked perfectly.  I disabled the "auto driver updates" with no problem.  Thanks much to all of you.
