I have a problem with unverified device drivers.

File signature verification reports 3 files are unverified: bthleenum.sys, bthpan.sys and bthport.sys which are bluetooth drivers.

When I try to update these drivers using device manager it reports that all these files are the latest and working properly.

Every time Windows 10 updates I have to turn off driver signatures before it will reboot.

Any suggestions?

you can try to uninstall the BT device from device manager, just right click it, select uninstall and tick to uninstall software if prompted.

then reboot and let windows re-download the drivers.

I uninstalled BT as you suggested and rebooted. 2 blue screens one after the other indicting a problem then a repair attempt which failed and offer to troubleshoot and f7 allows reboot.

File verifications still says those 3 files have not been digitally signed and device manager says they are OK?

had you already tried to download the one available from Acer support?

No I havn't downloaded any from Acer support.

When I go to the link you provided there are two BT drivers listed, one from Atheros and one from Realtec whereas I have 3 BT drivers which are not digitally signed so which do you recommend I download and what is the process for replacing the new driver for the three old ones?

The 3 drivers shown in my device manager now are: Bluetooth USB module, Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator and Microsoft Bluetooth LE Enumerator.

    A further question.

Are the 3 files that signature verification says are not signed the same ones that the device manager shows? I can find the file bthleenum.sys in the Microsoft Bluetooth LE Enumerator properties dialog but no sign of the other two files. The properties dialog for the Bluetooth USB module shows the author as Atheros.

i suspect the not signed is about the Atheros adapter, so download the Atheros version from Acer support website.

New Atheros driver downloaded and installed. No change in boot up. Signature verification still says it found 371 files of which 368 were signed but those same 3 were unsigned and all files were scanned. So long as those 3 sys files are in the windows\system32\drivers folder or are replaced with verified files I am going to get this problem every time Windoze 10 updates.

What would happen if I manually delete those files?

had you virus scan your system?

I have Avast antivirus which reports everything virus free. I also regularly run spybot, superantispyware and garyutilities 5. I have just downloaded a major update to Avast released yesterday which requires a reboot.

I do suspect that these unsigned files might be a suspect trojan but existing software scans have not found them if they are. I have had this problem for several months now which only came to light when MS made driver file signature obligatory on boot up.

I have tried permanently disabling driver signature enforcement but each update resets it back.

    It is doing my head in :-{

honestly i don't love Avasta, it created so many issues on the past on drivers, expecially audio.

by the way, as last resort, you can do a factory reset or clean windows 10 installation.

i don't have other ideas, since that BT sys files are part of windows stock drivers.

    Hi

Well I dont want to frighten you but the Acer website ones are certainly valid for Vista....

    [AddRegKeys]
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,SOFTWARE\ATHEROS\VistaAddOn,EnableLEWait,1,REG_DWORD
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,SOFTWARE\Atheros\VistaAddOn,A2DPSrcS3Delay,1000,REG_DWORD
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BtFilter\Parameters,RandomRemoteControllerId,1,REG_DWORD
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,SOFTWARE\Atheros\VistaAddOn,ResetAudioSink,1,REG_DWORD
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,SOFTWARE\ATHEROS\VistaAddOn,ResetPort,1,REG_DWORD
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,SOFTWARE\Atheros\VIstaAddOn,DeviceRecoverPolicy,4,REG_DWORD

even if it is spelled as VIsta.  So maybe you have to put them in as legacy drivers?

AAND I am sure you can answer yes to this.  "Please click OK and verify that the target system is running either Windows 95 (or later version), or Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 (or later version), before relaunching the installation"

It seems that the driver from Acer is 'pants' and probably will always be troublesome.  It is certainly ancient, and badly maintained, and I sympathise but cannot see anything close to the suggestions and help from Ironfly.

Thanks for your help so far Iron Fly.

I note your suspicion of Avast. Can you suggest another anti virus program?

the default windows antivirus is quite good if you keep it updated.

I downloaded Reimage which found 4 trojans. Subsequent investigation found that these trojans had avoided Avast protection through Classic Shell which I have been using since Microsoft scrapped the start menu but had issued a warning about and I missed. I have now uninstalled Classic Shell as MS has restored the start menu.

The Reimage program removed the 4 trojans and windoze now boots with no problems.

The Reimage software engineer warned there could be other problems that those trojans have caused and tried to sell me a full service at huge expense which I declined, however, their basic program seems to have done a good job for a mere £9 for a years use.

    Good to hear it.

at this point, i suggest you to think about a windows clean install with a good diskpart clean all command to completly wipe your HDD/SSD

Thanks for your help Iron Fly. I will certainly THINK of a clean install but not if or until I get any more problems.
