I recently tried to plug in a USB 3.0 external hard drive into the USB 3.0 port and it immediately caused my laptop to enter a weird sleep state where it won't wake from keyboard or touchpad imput or even the power button. I even tried a hard shutdown to no avail. The laptop just appeared off for all intents and purposes other than that the power light (not the charging light) was blinking amber. The only way to fix it is to unplug the external hard drive, about 10-20 seconds after which the screen comes back on in the windows lock screen with no POST or OS loading screen. I'd chalk this up to some sort of power incompatability but I tried pluging the external drive into the USB 2.0 slot and it functioned properly. Does anyone else have this problem or maybe even a solution?

are you able to check on Device manager if any yellow exclamation mark is visible?
