15 G9-593-77WF - High pitched noise coming from the GPU

Can anyone help me with any suggestions?

Well, I guess not. Too bad I can't find a specialised forum to provide support for the Predator units, it seems this isn't one.

have the same issue, or sound in the same spot, right in the middle of the vents in the back, i have the Predator17 G9 973, and the same when dissabling the g-sync the sound dissapears but when the changes applied the sound cames back, no solutions yet

in fact when you make any changes in the nvidia panel, in between any change or apply click the sound dissapears, i gess the sound is a related to the nvidia gpu

It is normal for a CPU and GPU to produce some kind of a noise. It is not the actual CPU and GPU that is producing the noise (most likely), it is the transformers. Transformers are switched at very high frequency, they produce EMF, which in short moves the windings backwards and forwards making them rub with each other. This happens thousands of times per second so it comes out as a high pitched noise.

It could be something else but as long as the noise isn't more like buzzing then I think it is fine.

By the way can you hear the noise when you are away from the laptop or you can hear only when it is quite and you put your ear close to the laptop?

i only hear it just when im close enough or in the night when there is no other sounds in the enviroment, but in the back of the laptop its a little bit louder, i suppouse its the cable from the screen conector making the sound. but its just my assumption. but I'm worried it's something that damages my latopp

I think there is nothing to worry about. You can also ask Acer if this is normal.

Thanks for your answers guys, I appreciate it. I understand it could be normal. Answering your question, the sound is pretty much Hard disk-like, when being used, like transferring files. I'd say it's quite audible, although not that loud. For instance, it stands out from the cooler noises when they're not under heavy load.

i give up i can live with the sound, i send a mail to acer for assistance and check if the guarranty its valid but if not its ok for me.

im listening music or playing games louder enough to forget about the sound every time i use the laptop, but if its there is a solution i fix my lap.

In this case, you could try resetting the computer if that does not fix the noise, it most likely be a hardware issue that needs repair.

Please contact Acer in your region for information on sending the unit for repair.

Thanks for answering. Unfortunately, the problem got worse with random crashes after the screen colors get all scrambled. I requested the repair online.
My question is, am I supposed to pay for the carrier to take it to the repair facility? I got this not more than months ago and a box this heavy would be costly to ship. The website has "strongly discouraged" me to use Post Office services on this matter. Thanks.

Hey, I have the exact same problem as you. However, I don't think though that we can already pinpoint the GPU as being the source of the noise; I think it could be the CPU and/or the motherboard.

Disabling/enabling GSync shuts it up for a few seconds, and inserting a USB stick in the laptop amplifies the sound for a second. But why would USB sticks really have anything to do with the GPU? Just a thought.

I'm pretty much entirely certain that the noise is something called "coil whine", after having looked it up online somewhat extensively. It's caused by the varying currents being fed to the component(s), causing it to vibrate if it's not kept very still.

You haven't opened it up to repaste or anything like that, have you? I did, and I do fear that that may somehow be the cause of the whining. I was quite sure I screwed all the screws up tight; I might open it up again and double check.

Have you tried anything out with Intel's "overspeed protection"? And have you learned anything additional that might help us both fix the problem?

I had same problem with my GX-791 and yes it is a coil whine.

Coil whine I do hear is virtually impossible to fix.

The problem with this is that it wasn't there before. The only way to make it less irritating is by turning up your volume or using headphones. I don't know if this coil whining is normal, as some devices don't have it. The only time, I used to hear this noise is when running furmark benchmark and it was at specific settings, I don't remember which. Also I found that having g-sync off used to lower the noise of it. I guess this choke had something to do with GPU, so I could hear it slightly, while playing games and a bit loud on furmark. Other benchmarks didn't trigger this noise, which was interesting.

I think it could be a short circuit or a voltage problem, it may affect multiple components.

I have, and it lowered the average temperature around 15ºC. However, I'm positive the noise was present before. It was there ever since the first boot up. Unfortunately, I haven't tried any voltage-managing softwares. I don't overclock the CPU or GPU via Predator Sense either, I just use it regularly at the "High Performance" battery setting.

Guys, I haven't found a solution so far. The noise is not the only problem, for the system now crashes randomly. Below you'll find the problem description I sent to Acer during the request for repair. Btw, they have provided the shipping, it made things easier. It's a 15kg package and shipping costs would be too high if I had to pay for them.

"High pitched noise coming from the GPU area. Noise exists all the time, even when under light load or idle (at desktop screen). Noise only vanishes for a few seconds in a specific scenario: after turning G-Sync on/off via the Nvidia menu, the noise will vanish for the 5s or so that it takes to enable/disable the feature. It will promptly resume afterwards.

More recently, I have experienced crashes while playing games. The screen will freeze or show random colors in a disorganised fashion, pretty much like a colorful static. Afterwards, the laptop will either reboot by itself or remain frozen until a hard reboot is performed (holding the power button for 5s)."
