Hello All;

I am looking to purchase the Predator 17 G5-793-72AU (link here) and have a few questions;

* is the 256GB (2 x 128gb SATA raid 0) SSD setup as the primary drive or is the 1TB drive the primary, ie where is Windows installed?

* in doing some research, it appears that I can install some type of cooler(?) in the bay. My question is whether or not I can install a CD/DVD optical drive instead (as this model is lacking one). I don't need the optical drive as I have an external drive already, just curious.

* does this have G-Sync and why would I want (vs need) one? mostly for RPG (skyrim, battlefield, etc)

    I'm almost sure that model doesn't include neither the optical drive nor the extra fan. But I think it should have g-sync.

    You'll be very happy with the new Predator, it's definitely one of best "new" laptops around with Nvidia latest GPUs. You should be aware though that one of tha mayor drawback is limited battery life. This applys to other brands with Pascall GPUs as well.

    You're right, Kaby Lake CPUs in gaming/high performance laptops likely will not be avalaible until Q2 2017 (first models will be announced in January), but they'll offer very limited performance improvements compared to skylake.

    Hello, kaedee.

    Laptops that came from the factory with SSD have always the OS installed in it because it's the more performing unit. It would be very easy to re-install it on a new drive anyway.

    The new predator series have g-sync (new technology to avoid tearing while gaming, it also make games run on a "fixed" frame rate - eg. 60fps steady instead of jumping from 50 to 80). It's one of those things to please hardcore gamers, but even they may prefer a screen with other better features (eg. better color reproduction, higher frequency, better response rate, etc.)

    This particular model though seems to be a less "premium unit", so I would check the reseller's description to be sure it features g-sync (but you can live without it, trust me). This also applies to the optical drive, which it should be missing. The "mainstream" predator series includes the usual DVD drive and gives you the opportunity to manually replace it with an "extra fan" (easily).

    DVD drives are becoming less and less popular, what is curious it that some manufacturers are shipping laptops without a DVD drive but still with the usual a DVD disk for drivers instead to switch to a cheap USB drive.

    As long as the extra "cooler" as you called it (again, check if it's included), it has been described as "just a gimmick" in several reviews. Meaning it does not have a real tangible effect on the temperatures of the device. So again, even if it does not have it, you'll live (happily) without it too.

    Alien,

    Thanks for your reply and info.

    I am buying from amazon.ca (Amazon link) and they do not mention the optical drive nor the cooler (no mention of the g-sync either), this was from what I read about this particular laptop from the internet. The price is right and I need to replace my current 6-7 year old Acer Aspire. Like I stated I need neither of the items, just curious.

    I am wanting a newer (ie current) laptop and I am not paying as high a price as listed on the link above, so I can live with a "non-premium laptop". I know Intel has released a new "i7", Kaby Lake, but I prefer quad-core and thats probably not going to be released for another 6-8 months.

    Hello kaedee

    Can you please update us when you buy your Predator as to whether it has G-Sync integrated in its own monitor because I'm thinking of buying one myself.

    Thank you

    Hello Ghaith,

    Just got the Predator and I love it. To answer your question it appears that this laptop does have/support G-Sync (according to the Nvidia Control Panel - see attachment.
