SSD M.2 Raid 0

My Predator is G9-793-79WJ

I want to replace my Lite-On M.2 SSD of 256 GB with 2 Crucial MX300 M.2 525GB, and put them in raid.

Is this going to work ? The Crucial SSD is B+M. The first M.2 slot is M key and the second M.2 on the laptop is B key.

Anyone tried with other types of M.2 SSD for raid ?

  • I don't know if it works, but theoretically it should.

But the question is here, if you really need absolutely one disc device or can you also use different?

If you don't have a second fast SSD to copy your data to, you have a fast booting operating system with one TB paritition (for e.g.). If you copy for e.g. one large file from one folder to the other, you might have not more performance than copying from one single disc to another. So it always depends on what you intend to do exactly with your Laptop.

Just to gamble you don't need really a Raid 0. I did testing with an external USB SSD and the NVME SSD. Doom did not start really the 10x faster the NVME SSD performs as not only the bandwith is an important factor here. This might be obvious, but just to show, that reaching a certain limit of I0s and bandwith does not really show a big difference in reality.

I want to use this partition for operating system, apps and games. For other large files like movies, kits and stuff, I will install another HDD with more space on it. So transferring files from one partition to another isn't an issue. My thinking here was, for the price of one stick of 500GB nVME I could buy 2 500GB of Sata III SSDs, and theoretically I should have speeds somewhere close to nVME (or at least the combined speed of both drives if I put then in raid).

i don't think a RAID0 SSD configuration is worth the hassle today, having 2 SSD will consume more power (compared to a nVME solution) and you must think that you rise the probability of having something going wrong.

    2 SSD instead of 1 and a RAID0 configuration.

and...i have a RAID0 SSD on my desktop but they are 2 old SSD so this can help with performance.

    I'm not an Acer employee.
  • i don't know what NVME SSD you're thinking about. I have the 950Pro running. You can read the specs if you ask your favorite search engine. Speed is around 100% faster than a Raid 0 here, that's a matter of fact. And you have to backup your data frequently to avoid data loss (it happens more often with Raid 0 due to many reasons).

I know NVME are faster than raid 0 SSD, the problem was the pricing. 2 sticks of SSD SataIII are way cheaper than 1 stick of NVME SSD same size, and a Raid 0 should be somewhat close to NVME speeds, or at least better than a single SSD Sata III.

I went and bought 2 Crucial MX300 275GB SSD M.2 Sata III and connected them in Raid 0. Speeds are better, but not what I was expecting... and certainly not something worth the risk of Raid 0.

Top Image is 1 stick Crucial SSD MX300 275GB M.2 and second is a pair in Raid 0.

After this experiment I came to this conclusion :

    - Instead of Raid, a NVME Stick for OS and maybe some daily used games is better, and for the second slot a larger SSD for other programs/files/games...
