Which tablet? Which release of W10? Are you talking about the swipe up to get the password entry field? Are any of the other icons visible on the screen when you boot?

    It is Acer Iconia 8W W1 81.

Not sure about the Windows 10; it was the update about three weeks ago; I had already been running windows 10 without issue.

Yes, no swipe up for password entry field.  Screen shows date and time from the left, lower part of screen and the WiFi icon in the bottom right corner; background is standard windows picture, in my case the beach, sea with two rock formations showing.

    Thanks

Try connecting a keyboard and pressing a Ctrl-Alt-Del or Enter to see if it's hung just before the login screen or whether it's just set to require a second step before showing the screen. I know that domain joined ones typically require the C-A-D to get the screen and yours might be corrupted to have the same requirement.

Thank you. I connected a stand along keyboard - nothing, no change at all. Then I connected the tablet to a laptop - on boot this time it displays a Windows update screen - along the lines of 'Do not switch off you computer, updates are installing' - this shows for a couple of seconds, then displays the standard start up screen, without any swipe functions. I can access the tablet via the laptop and see in the folders ...... any suggestions please?

First step is to let it run for a day or so, just to verify that it's not just doing some really long update. If that doesn't work you could try deleting all the update file and then retry the boot. Do updates manually one at a time if it comes up.

Thanks but it sits on the start up screen and nothing appears to be happening - no lights flashing etc.  If I leave it after about 10 minutes the screen goes blank - although you can see power is still there because there is feint light around the edges.  After leaving for a further 30 minutes, no change - the tablet has to be forced off before restarting.

should I just leave it on, as you suggest?

Yes, I think that is the best choice for now. Give it overnight with power connected and see if there's any change by the next morning. We'll dive in deeper if there's no change.

Thanks; apologies for long delay - family matters kept me busy elsewhere.

I still cannot access the tablet, when switching on there is no swipe screen to allow password entry. I have download a copy of Windows 10 to install, however, now get a message saying 'system doesn't have any USB boot option. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager menu.'

How do I get to the Boot Manager menu?

I have the Windows 10 available on both USB and Micro SD.

    Thanks for your help.

Try plugging a keyboard in and hitting return instead of doing the swipe. You can then fire up Device Manager to see if it's a glitch with Windows not liking the touchscreen during boot or a hardware problem where Windows doesn't see the touch screen at all.

    Keyboard does not work either.

I am unable to either reset or system restore.

What is the drive letter for SD card? I will try reinstalling Windows 10
