I've just found this thread after having had this problem for a couple of months.  I was planning to get a new monitor but was a bit hesitant in case it was a PC problem but this thread has confirmed for me that it is a monitor problem.  So thanks to all who posted.

For the record I have been doing the same process of disconnecting and reconnecting power cord and it only works some times often after a number of attempts I gather from this thread that I should leave the power cord out for a minute or even unplug the power cable completely.   I shall try  that but will probaly end up buying a new monitor anyway.

For the record, following my post above, I have unplugged the power lead for the last two nights .  Each morning I have switched on the PC and then plugged the monitotor cable back in.  It's worked perfectly both days.  Thanks again for the idea, it's a minor inconvenience for prolonging the useful life of the monoitor which I do like a lot
