Aspire XC-605 won't restart

Hi all,

I inherited an Aspire XC-605 and upgraded it from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

As long as I have it, it wouldn't restart. It seems to close Windows and then screen goes into sleep mode, but the LED and fans keep going. This wasn't really an issue before, but the latest Windows update requires a few restarts to update properly. All I can do is wait till the screen goes to sleep and then do a manual restart with the power button.

I then get an error message that the PC didn't shut down properly and needs a restart, which it then promptly tries. I then need to restart it with the power button again, get the error message again and I'm stuck in this loop till I get the option to do a system restore. However, the updates aren't installed yet and the whole circus begins again.

The normal shutdown works fine.

Because I have also have the usual Win10 problem of freezing I have to do a hard restart several times per day anyway, but now that update tries to install itself every time the PC is booting up again... for which a restart is required and I get stuck in the loop again till I get the option for a system restore.

I only have a minimum of computer skills and I searched and tried solutions on Google for a week now, but nothing fixed this issue. Any help or suggestions are more than welcome!

which kind of solutions have you tried?

have you already tried to disable fast startup?

    http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-10-a.html

honestly after so many bad restarts and shutdown, i would re-install windows 10.

Thanks for your reply! I did what is described in post #2 here: http://www.tenforums.com/general-support/19805-windows-10-wont-do-restart.html Unfortunately that didn't help. I don't have the knowledge to work with the Registry.

I did re-install Win10 while keeping my documents a few days ago but that didn't make any difference. I did forget to mention this PC has been upgraded with a new Intel i5 processor just before I got it, in case that makes any difference.

Thanks for the help again, here it is:

    BIOS Version/Date    American Megatrends Inc. P11-A2, 8-11-2013

    BIOS Mode    Legacy

I think Acer has an update for the BIOS on the website but updating it seems a bit risky?

check if you are able to upgrade using this version:

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_P11.B4_A_A.zip?acerid=635755727310704328&Step1=DESKTOP&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%20XC-605&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_6

(if your BIOS has UEFI version, it will be better to re-install windows 10 using UEFI for compatibility issues)

I downloaded and unzipped the update package, but the instructions in the readme.pdf stop making sense after Step 4 and I'm very hesitant to just go experimenting on my own with this.

How can I check if the BIOS has an UEFI version? I never saw it metioned in the BIOS itself.

    check if LaunchCSM is enabled.

about BIOS update, on WIN folder, rigth click flash.bat and choose to run it as administrator.

    LaunchCSM is set to [Always].

When I right-click flash.bat and run it as an admin I get the pop-up that asks if I want to allow the app to make changes, but when I click 'yes' the pop-up disappears again and nothing happens?

Ok, don't disable launch CSM or you will not able to boot windows but if you decide to re-install it, set it to never.
Now copy the win and rom folder to C:
Then open a command prompt (admin) as wrote in the pdf.

    Now type
    cd c:\win
    flash.bat

    Then follow onscreen instructions

Isn't setting the CMS to [Never] the same as disabling it?

After following your instructions I got the following in the Command Prompt (Admin):

    c:\Win>afuwinx64 ..\ROM\P11-B4.4M /p /b /n /r
This version of c:\Win\afuwinx64.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information and then contact the software publisher.

Yes, but since windows OS was installed under LaunchCSM, it's missing EFI partition that's needed to boot under UEFI (launchCSM disabled).

can you try this BIOS update?

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_P11.A4_A_A.zip?acerid=635397962614366094&Step1=DESKTOP&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%20XC-605&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_6

EDIT: your windows 10 is x86 or x64?

Unfortunately, the 2nd link gives the same result:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.14393]
    (c) 2016 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>cd c:\win

    c:\Win>flash.bat

    c:\Win>afuwinx64 ..\ROM\P11-B4.4M /p /b /n /r
This version of c:\Win\afuwinx64.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information and then contact the software publisher.

Just to be clear, the LaunchCSM should be abled or disabled?

    It's a 32-bit Operating System with a X64-based processor.

Thanks for your help till now, it's very much appreciated!

the flash tool is x64 only, so it will never work on your OS.

i don't know how many personal data you have on your PC but...i would suggest you to re-install windows 10 using an x64 image and disabling LaunchCSM for better compatibility; you will need to wipe your HDD completly.

if you want to just update BIOS, there's another way to do it, using a DOS flasher but it's only available on Linux BIOS package and you need to edit a file to let it work with BIOS image; you need to create a bootable USB DOS flash drive too.

    let me know your choice.

So what seemed to be a reasonable simple problem (failing to restart) is actually quite complicated... I do have a fair amount of personal files on this PC and I will have to borrow an extra external HD to temporarily store it all on.

The second option is completely new territory for me.

A third option might be re-installing Win8.1 or even Win7. When it works Win10 is fairly good but other than this restarting issue I also have multiple freezes per day that combined with the forced updates that require restarts put me in a circle required restarts because the previous restart failed untill I can do a system restore... Today alone I had to do 3 already.

    What would you do?

    there are 2 strange things:

    1) why a 32bit installation? (how much ram is installed?)

    2) why LaunchCSM? (which original windows OS was installed?)

I think the original OS was Win 8.1.

Not sure why it's a 32bit... Where can I see how much RAM it has?

    6 GB (3,31 GB usable).

Your system uses half of the available ram due to the 32 bit OS, if you don't need a 32 bit OS for some special software, it's time to install a 64 bit OS.

That makes sense. Would re-installing Win 8.1 (I have the original CDs here, for both 32 and 64-bit) and then upgrading to Win 10 again help?

I don't understand why the restarting issue suddenly became a problem now. I have been using this PC for close to a year now and previous Win 10 updates just installed fine. The only real problem I had with it till 1 week ago was the freezing.
