Can you expand the solid state drive in an Aspire One Cloudbook?

Not readily as the SSD used is integrated with the MB.

Great. Then I bought a brick that can't handle the updates to the OS it was purchased with...I didn't want much, but got less than I expected...

You can sometimes get around this issue by transferring data & running apps externally (eg from a cloud drive such as googledrive, etc) instead of from the internal SSD.

Have tried many times to save and execute from a card in the SD slot. Seems to work great until after an hour or so and a bootup it runs into some sort of an EOF error due to the SD drive not being available yet in the bootup and the entire installation crashes for no net result.

You might instead wanna try saving & executing via a cloud drive as cloudbooks and similar lean web-centric machines are designed to work in that manner with minimal user hardware.
