    Hi daffytodd!  Welcome to the Acer Community!

    If you could give a bit more information about your new laptop such as model number and operating system, I can move your question to one of the other forums to give it better exposure!

    Thanks!

    An outdated, incompatible or damaged driver can disrupt communication between the system and the video card.

    I suggest you remove the video card driver and reinstall the manufacturer's website.

    First you will have to start the system in Safe Mode by following the steps below:

    1. Turn off the computer by on / off button;Turn on the computer
    2. constantly pressing the F8 key;
    3. In the options that appear, click Troubleshooting;
    4. Now click Advanced Options;
    5. In the options that appear, click Startup Settings;
    6. Click the Reset button;
    7. Choose Safe Mode (Enable Safe Mode).

    After starting the computer in Safe Mode, remove the Driver Video Card:

    1. simultaneously press the Windows key + X;
    2. Click on the Device Manager option;
    3. Click the arrow that points to Video Adapter;
    4. Click the right mouse button on the installed device and click Uninstall;
    5. Restart the computer.

    After restarting the computer, visit the website of the manufacturer and the model install the driver for your video card compatible with Windows 8.1 because Windows 10 may be that even the manufacturer of your equipment has released an update for device
