G9-791 Continuous BSODs after BIOS update

Hi all,

My system is Predator G9-791 with Windows 10;

Yesterday I've noticed there are new drivers and BIOS in ACER CARE CENTER.

Drivers were:

  • audio (realtek, 6.0.1.7695);
  • VGA (intel, 20.19.15.4352);
  • WiFi (qualcomm, 12.0.0.186);

So I've downloaded and installed them, following all instructions for the process.

However, after restart, windows started crashing with random BSODs, even before log-on.

1. I've tried starting Windows in recovery mode, it is OK.

2. I've tried then System Restore, to roll-back the drivers. NOT OK. The problem continued after restart.

3. I've made clean install of Windows 10. So far so good, until I've installed drivers for NVidia.

4. Disabling NVidia from Device Manager - OK, all works without problem.

5. Tried installing older version of NVidia drivers - NOT OK, still multiple random BSODs at startup.

6. I came to a conclusion that the new BIOS is somehow incompatible with the video drivers of nVidia, so tried to downgrade, but the older bios setup refuses to install, showing message that it is older than the current (no changes were made).

So now I'm stuck with non-functioning video, using only the Intel's one.

HELP ??????

    Never ever try to downgrade BIOS. Its dangerous and will void your warranty.

    Problem came after upgrading BIOS and before you had no issues?

    Hi Lyon,

    Yes, problems started after the BIOS update (v1.10).

    Before that, all worked flawlessly.

    Did you try to install VGA drivers directly from Intel website? The same for nVidia card.

    I agree to Lyon. I would do the following steps:

    - update graphics drivers and give it a try

    - if not successful, update Killer Network driver (caused also some BSODs in this forum) - and again try it out

    - did you disable TPM in Bios? If not, do so and try it again.

    - what is the text of the BSODs?

    - disable Killer Network drivers in device manager and try it again

    - I also had some problems after Bios update which where solved by restoring factory defaults

    good luck steve

    Hi Lyon,
    I tried changing only nVidia driver, because it is the one that, when enabled, made errors. I tried disabling Intel's driver, it didn't make BSODs go away. But I haven't tried another version for Intel graphics.
    Anyway, I already gave up and sent the laptop for repair to the retailer.

    Thank you for your efforts, and sory to lose your time.
    Best regards

    beststevie, I've given up trying to fix it by myself. I am kind of frustrated that there might be so much inconsistencies for such an expensive product. Acer should care more.
    Just for the record, The errors were random, not only one. I'll post more info if I have any when I get it back.

    Hi all,

    Just for the record, what the support did was to downgrade the BIOS to version 1.06.

    Not a brilliant solution, but it is the only one that worked, and at least I can use the laptop now.

    I hope the next BIOS update, when released from ACER, would be more thoroughly tested.

    wish you luck,
