While upgrading to WIn10, the process failed at around 12% and rebooted to a blue acreen that said

--->

Recovery

Your PC Needs to be repaired

A required device isn't connected or cannot be accessed.

.......

.....

Press the windows key for UEFI firmware settings.

<---

In bios, I set boot order to USB HDD first and disabled secure boot. I put a Win8.1 USB thumbdrive made in Rufus... when it boots, the thumbdrive flashes as it is accessed, but it goes only to the same blue screen mentioned above.

Please help

Rufus set with GPT partition scheme and FAT32?

Instead of settings USB HDD as first bootable device, enable F12 boot menu on BIOS, so you can press F12 and choose your bootable device.

thanks for the reply, my thumbdrive was an MBR with NTFS file system. With your help I managed to get into setup much more than I had before. It would be good to not have to do a complete wipe, but I don't see any recovery options.

The iso I have is the Win8.1 w Bing install from another tablet make. Can you suggest where I might get the prooper OS, or better even, how I might (try to) restore it to pre-upgrade attempt state.

    Thanks

first of all try Alt+F10 keys at boot and check if you are able to enter recovery.

if not, Switch 10 uses Windows 8.1 Home or with Bing, you need to check with the exact model or looking at the stickers on the box.

    SW5-xxx

    if it's Home x86 version:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

use the download tool and download the home version iso and then burn it using Rufus as GPT and FAT32.

or you can try a clean windows 10 install

or buy the original Acer recovery media:

if you are outside the US and Canada, you must call/email your regional Acer support service:

You rock, ALt-F10 gives no joy, but I will try those other options and post my results.

it is a SW3 013 168G and I'm from Canada. I only bought it in December of 2015.

go for a windows 10 clean install or if it fails, give Acer support service a call.

Thanks, that's what I'll do, any suggestions on how to deal with the serial issue? I don't have the Windows key numbers for the tablet.

It's embedded on BIOS, windows installation will read it automatically.

You've been such a great help. Once I got the "Create Install Media" plugged in things went very smoothly. It activated and all features seemed to be running, drivers for audio, bluetooth, Wifi etc.... great!

Thank you for your sage advice and helpful links.
