I have an Aspire 5920 running Vista 32 with SP 2. When I try to install the Upgrade Asst Tool from the Acer site, I get this error message   --This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service.--

Now, what do I do?

It has been almost I day since I posted this and only a few have fewed, so here is my plan. I have backed up my Laptop, C & D drives to an external drive using bith a backup utility and using Windows Easy Transfer. I have my Acer Recovery discs and my Acer drivers discs and my Win XP and Vista discs from my desktop. In Microsofts Knowledge base I saw a problem with installing Vista SP2 when Vista was originally installed from an image. So I will re install Vista using the original discs as they come from MSft. I will try to install the Acer Upgrade Asstitant tool after that. The next choice is to install Win8 from the disc and reinstall Acer UAT after win8 in in place. I will use the Assst to complete the installation and find the necessary drivers. I will keep the community informed in case others can benefit from my trialing this.

Eurica! I have Win8 Pro running in a dual boot with Vista SP2 wih both Office 2003 Pro and Office 2013 Home 365 fully functional.

Here is what I ran into. As you will recall, the Acer Windows 8 Upgrade Tool would not load because it said I needed Vista SP 2 installed. But, a visit to Control Panel>System showed I was running Vista SP 2. After several tries to convince the Tool to install I decided to make a visit to Microsoft’s Technet and check their Knowledgebase. I found an article that suggested that many images made for multiple installations of Windows will leave out some seemingly unnecessary parts of Windows. However, those parts may be necessary to get Service Pack 2 to fully install. Thus the problem with installing other software that needs SP2. It suggested reinstalling Vista from disc rather than the Acer eRecovery utility. Fortunately I had discs for upgrading my desktop. After 8 days of fighting with the reinstall and chasing drivers and Acer utility applications I gave up and said I have already backed the computer up to an external drive using Windows Easy Transfer, so I am going to install Windows 8 and let it install Acer’s Tool. Fortunately, while playing with Vista I discovered that both partitions on my hard drive were considered primary drives and I was able to install Vista as a dual boot with itself. I installed Win8 over the new Vista which did not have all the necessary drivers working.

It worked! Win8 installed. Acer’s Tool installed and it completed the restore of all my data and files in D Drive. When I reinstalled Office 2003, it totally installed and had full access to all the information including all the PST files for Outlook. Both sides of the dual boot showed the same emails, calendars, etc. and archives.  My biggest beef so far is the lack of updated drivers and some software. My Firewall is not updated for Win8 so I am using the Microsoft default for Win8. Acer’s Empowering Technology is no longer supported so not all of its widgets etc work properly and eRecovery gives error messages whenever I reboot.

While exploring Win8 I came across the 1 month trial for Office 2013 Home 365. I downloaded it and let it install. The process was greatly improved over previous Windows versions. When I opened Outlook, the critical test, all was as it should be and everything was as it was for Office 2003. Even the rules worked correctly. All this happened without my input to point it to the correct information. My database which was originally written for Dbase and updated for Access 95 and subsequently to run in Access 2003 is the only problem.  I really didn’t expect it to move forward easily. The latest version is over 10 years old. I still have something to play with.

    Acer Tommy:

There are no drivers listed on your link for Win8, but most of the Win7 ones work with a few exceptions.  Your knowledgebase was not helpful, but Microsoft's sent me in the right direction, but by the back door. That's OK. It gave me a chance to experiment and learn that the ugly conversations I have been seeing on the net about Win8 show the frustrations of someone who isn't as technically savvy as they think they are and who probably are adverse to change. Definately the wrong area to be working if that is true. The Tech World throughs change at us so fast its hard to see it before we are pinned against the wall.

    Thanks for answering.
