if you are still in the first 30days of windows 10 isntallation, you can revert from windows settings:

if you want to install from CD/DVD, put the CD on your laptop, press F12 at boot and choose to boot from CD (if F12 doesn't work, you must check on BIOS if it's enabled; press F2 at boot, enable F12, press F10 to save and exit), then you must select custom installation and format your HDD before installating.

thanks for the info-it has been longer than one month, so I cannot revert back.  I am also trying to try your other suggestion.  Not sure if I am doing something correct.  If you can, clarification would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I am not very computer savy, so I don't know how to explain.  I do have troubleshooting support with Microsoft-they tried the F12 with boot, it did not work.  Maybe I can try again with them, thanks again for your support and helpful advice.  My printer is not compatible with Windows 10, and was trying to go back to windown 8.1 so it would work again.  Not use the printer very much at home, so did not know it was going to be an issue.  Might have to purchase a new printer.

    what's your printer model?

have you checked on BIOS if F12 boot list key is enabled?

what happen when you press F12 at boot?

This is why you really, really, REALLY need to make a recovery flash and take a system image BEFORE making a major change. Takes about 20 minutes. If you do recovery is easy. If not you may have an expensive paperweight.

Back in the last century there were two types of anti-virus programs, signature scanners like McAfee and Norton and Integrity management tools like Enigma-Logic and Safeboot. Integrity management tools were far better at recovery but failed because they had to be applied to a clean machine and no-one could be bothered.

My printer is Lexmark X2670.  It is not compatible with Win 10.  What is happening when I press F12 is a blue screen with 4 choices show up.  With microsoft online last night, we installed CD, booted while holding F12, then desktop showed up.  Sometimes when the four boot choices showed up, we would choose one with CD in the title and the desktop would show up.  Would not boot from the CD.

What is happening is that the UEFI is looking for a digital signature on the boot media that matches one in its library (why a Win-64 machine will not recognize a Win 32 CD - different signatures.

If you create a recovery flash drive (Win 8 can use a 8GB, Win 10 wants at least a 16) and then slect that It should boot from that since it will have a signature it is looking for.

BTW have you tried insalling a Win 8 driver from Lexmark ? Many Win8 drivers will work with Win 10, often better than the updated ones.

ps are you running Win 10586 ? That update fixed many things.

Thank you both for your help.  I contacted Lexmark via chat-and we checked and downloaded the Win 8 driver with the link, and it still will not work.  Rather than continue to pursue this, I will discuss with husband, we will get a new printer that is compatitable.  Will take care of getting the Lexmark to a new home.

    ehm

the Lexmark help, has told you to run the installer or setup.exe file as windows 8 compatibility mode?

    rigth click the executable file

    choose Properties

    choose compatibility tab

    tick Compatibility mode

    select windows 8

    click apply

    click OK

    run the executable file

I have to get ready to leave-the executable file, I'm not sure what you mean.  I am really not a computer person, this is so foreign to me.  Sorry.

    Litbit10,

I don't have a lexmark printer but I have a canon printer.  The only way I could get the driver installed under Windows 10 TH2 was to go to settings and disable a setting. I had to turn "Let Wndows manage my default printer" to "off".  It took me three weeks of banging my head against the wall before I found the solution in canon forum. After I turned it to "off", I was able to install the driver package no problem. Since I have Canon printer and you have Lexmark, it may be totally unrelated to your problem.

thanks so much for all your suggestions.  I am out of town, will try when I get home.  If no success, I will check into getting a new printer, thinking canon.  Also, will try to stay in Win 10, and not downgrade back to Win 8.1-just move forward with technology.
