About to buy Asus PG348Q as too many issues with X34

I was going to buy the Predator x34 today but stumbled across this forum and it scared me into buying one.

It's a shame as the X34 looks better than the Asus.

Is this still the case or can I cancel my pre order with Scan Computers UK and get the predator?

I'm in same boat. I've been researching UW with G sync and the X34 got great reviews from everyone except actual end users. Seems like a mixed bag though, some users aren't having the issues. Kind of a risk unless the problems have been solved. And even then, you would need the date so you could make sure your "batch" was a newer one. The only way to really verify that would be to purchase from an actual store so you could check right there.

Thing is I like the Acer Predator a lot more than the Asus.

    Agreed.

Is G Sync important to you? If not, there are some good options.

I would like to say that there are only a small number of real issues people have been complaining about on these forums.  A lot of the posts are recycled problems coming from different users over and over, mostly relating to them using dodgy DP cables or not understanding how the Overclocking refresh rate works.

The main issues that were discussed are:

100hz overclock - mostly user error

    - This is usually an issue with the DP cable being used.  It has to be a high quality "4k rated" cable, like the one provided in the box.  Some people try to use longer cables which are bad quality etc. and can't overclock to 100hz, getting flickering or black screens.  This is nearly always solved by using the correct cable.

Half the backlight doesn't light up - Acer fixed this so new X34's shouldn't have this problem anyway

    - I've got this issue currently, but it's so minor I can live with it easily.  Basically what happens is maybe 1/10 times the monitor wakes from sleep, only half of the backlight lights up.  Once the monitor gets past the firmware boot logo and into Windows, it's usually corrected itself, and if not then all I have to do is power cycle the monitor with the button on the bottom-right.  No big deal, and Acer fixed this on newer models or will fix it under warranty if an existing monitor exhibits this.

Coil whine at 100hz on white images like webpages

    - Most users report VERY MINOR or no coil whine at all.  I have some but it's so tiny I can only hear it when there is literally no other noise in the room at all in the dead of night, and even then only with my head right up against the screen (which I don't do normally).

Scan-lines when running with G-Sync ON

    - This issue is still ongoing.  This is the one that almost every user has noted so far and Acer haven't been able to respond to yet.  The issue is very tiny grainy horizontal lines when running with G-sync ON.  Hardly noticeable, again you have to get VERY close up to the image to be able to see it, but it can be distracting on some images such as a bright blue sky on Just Cause 3.  I have an open ticket with NVIDIA about this as well, so I'm sure Acer and NV are working to find the cause of this.  It's very likely to affect any other G-Sync monitor running the newest iteration of the G-Sync module, which includes the upcoming Asus, and could potentially be fixed by an NVIDIA driver update, or some firmware update for the G-Sync module itself, not really sure to be honest.  On a day-to-day basis, this issue also doesn't really bother me though, only if I remember about it and look VERY closely at the screen.

This is the one that seems to be a deal-breaker for a lot of people so do some reading into this problem and decide if you want to risk it or not.  It doesn't bother some users as much as others.  It may also be prudent to wait for more information on this issue, or for other buyers of upcoming monitors such as the Asus, to see if they also have this problem because I suspect that they might well do if NVIDIA haven't changed anything between the X34 release and now with regards to their G-sync module.

So there you have it, an overview of the issues you will find littered all over this forum.  Most of them are recycled from one of the 4 issues above, and these have all been addressed apart from the scan-lines issue.

In any case, if you're in the UK then you are protected by some good consumer laws, especially since October of last year when some new laws came into place.  There is no harm in you purchasing the X34 and trying it for 2-3 weeks.  Use this bucket list above to check out the issues for yourself on your purchase and see whether any of them are there or not.  Decide if you want to keep the monitor, or you have up to a month to return it without any questions asked to the vendor you bought it from for a full refund.  Then you don't need to worry about going through RMAs, repair processes, etc. if it will be too much of a hassle for you.  I bought mine from scan.co.uk too and they were more than helpful with customer service.

Personally I love my X34 and wouldn't get rid of it for the world, it's such a crazy immersive awesome experience, even though some games like Fallout 4 require a ton of mods and config 'hacking' to get them to work with this resolution, MOST games I've been playing support it straight off and work superbly Smiley Happy
