Screen replaced, still does it.  Tech says this is a known issue with this model, which will be fixed by BIOS upgrade.  I cannot find any evidence in any forums that this is true.  Can I take my tech at his word?

Have you tried to cable out to an external TV or monitor to see if your video card is OK? Have you tried toggling the lid screen on and off with the F5 or F6 keys?

Yes to both.  But I don't think this has anything to do with the hardware.  It occurs only if the computer has been put into sleep mode, (not if one closes the computer down completely and reboots fresh).  And sometimes one gets a splash screen flash by, followed by a black screen.  Part of the problem is is that it is inconsistent and intermittent, so hard to track down.

May I pose my question again?  Is the tech stringing me a line, or is he correct that 1) This  is a known issue with the 5734Z series?  2) a BIOS upgrade will fix it?

OK. What do you mean by "splash screen flash"? Intermittent/inconsisent video behavior usually means loose/dirty connections or an intermittent break in the video ribbon cable particularly if you have a habit of opening & closing the lid a lot. It'd be nice to know if it also occurs with an external monitor.

I personally have seen no info that suggests this is a known issue with this particular model. So, at this point, I'd resist or at leat delay trying to flash the bios. At most, I'd F2 into the existing bios to assure it properly recognizes all the hardware in its settings. Then save its settings and exit.
