Iconia W4-820 Windows 10 product key invalid

So, I've got two W4s. On one of them Windows 10 installed perfectly and activated OK. On the other one WiFi didn't work after the installation so I couldn't do much, including activating Win 10. I decided to reinstall Win 10 which seemed to work alright until I noticed that the Windows product key wasn't valid anymore. Which of course means I can't activate. After some googling I found that this can happen when you do a Win 10 installation on top of another that hasn't been activated, which I couldn't with the WiFi not working previously. I rang MS support and they were not very helpful to say the least.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this?

Well I keep some hi-gain enGenius USB WiFi adapters around for camping but all you need is one of these if your WiFi does not work. At home I use a 10/100 RJ-45 adapter since have wired ethernet available.

BTW, Win 10 keys are different from the Win 8/8.1 key stored in the BIOS, you need to begin the upgrade from fully patched 8.1 (or 7) and the upgrade process will add the new key.

Sorry, should have been more clear. I did start with fully patched 8.1 on both. I think I've still got the recovery partition on one of them. Would it be possible to create 8.1 recovery media in Win 10 on that one somehow since the partition should still contain 8.1? What software would I need for that? I got rid of all Acer bloatware first thing on both of them so I'm guessing I might have to download something?

Since windows 10 wasn't able to activate you will need to reinstall 8.1 and do the upgrade over again.

You shouldn't need to bother installing the 8.1 updates first, at least I didn't on a clean 7 install I just upgraded to 10. I used a 10 ISO though; I don't know if the media creation tool needs any updates to run.

You should be able to revert to 8.1 from the 10 install if you chose to keep your old files. It doesn't always work though.
