Hi My acer 5102 stopped in a scan and now on startup i get error 0200 failure fixed disc 0 so I guess the hard drive is dead. I cannot enter the bios because it needs a password. I don’t think I ever set one and have tried some shown as defaults on other websites but no luck. I have a restore factory defaults CD but will this work with a new drive without having access to the bios? Any help please>

    Hello Paul,

A stupid question (remove the battery before to do anything):

1- Have you removed and reinserted the HDD?

2- Have you changed the RTC battery (2006)?

    Hi Laurent

I have removed and replaced the harddisc.   I have not replaced the RTC battery ( the laptop dates from 2006).  If you think it should be replaced  I am not sure where to find it and could it be this battery and not the harddisc which is at fault?

    Hello Paul,

You wrote in your pevious messages:

    1- Password request (never create)

2- Failure disk fixed 0 (may be the laptop see randomly the HDD)

If the RTC battery is defective (very low voltage), the bios memory update is aleatory and causes malfunction.

The RTC battery or Cmos battery is probably soldered on the motherboard.

    Hi

I have regained access to the BIOS by shorting the CMOS battery under the WIFI module.  I have changed the boot sequence to start with USB/CDRom.  I have a Norton Ghost image of the dead disk so should be able to put new drive and load the image  BUT  my Norton Ghost emergency CD (from Norton Ghost 2003) does not start on this laptop ( I have 2 but neither works ). Are you able to give me any help with this?
