Need to reload OS

I have a Acer Tablet that I am in dire need of help with.

It is my daughter's, living with my ex, and she put a password program on and then forgot the password. There is nothing on the tablet that needs saving. I want to reload the OS, but when I follw the instructions it goes right back to asking for a PW. There is not an SD card in the slot. I am not sure of the model, but the SNID is: [edited for privacy]

What do I need to do to get this back functional? Just need to load some type of OS on it so she can fool around.

Thank you, any help is appreciated.

    try this:

Set the rotation lock switch to UNLOCKED, then a hold VOL UP, and hold the power button.

When the tablet vibrates, release the power button, but hold the VOL UP key, then a rotation move the switch back and forth Until the words "Erasing Userdata" appear. If the red "bootloader Unrecoverable error" Appears, press and hold the power button Until the system turns off.

Repeat process (Ensuring That the rotation lock switch is September to the UNLOCKED position before turning on the tablet each time) Until the red text does not Appear and instead "Erasing Cache" Appears.

It will take more than 10 times. For me, It Took About 11 tries. Your mileage may vary.

NOTE: On your 4th or 5th try, you will likely be unable to get the "Erasing Userdata" message to Appear, and the tablet will start trying to boot. If This happens, hold the power button and continue the cycle. This standard Seems to be, and does not break anything. When the "Erasing Cache" message Appears, stop rebooting the tablet and let it go through it's process. It will reboot, then a boot into Android. About After 2-3 minutes, you'll be Greeted With the welcome screen, And Then you're good to go from there on out.

if possible report the model not the SNID, so we can help you to do a factory reset.

I am sorry for the lack of information, I don't know the model, but my guess is a Iconia of some type. I was asked by my daughter to see if I can get this working.

When I try to reset it by holding down the power and volume it seems to be looking to access an SD card. There is no SD card in the tablet. Is there a place I can download the OS to an Sd card and reload it on the tablet?

    Again, any help is appreciated.

It'll be important to get both the model number and current build installed. With those you can go to the Acer support site and download the OS, which typically comes as a zip file containing either only another zip (named update.zip) or the update.zip plus a text file with instructions. You place update.zip in the root of a FAT32 formatted SD card then go into reset with the magic key presses. It'll find the update.zip and do an install.

The problem comes when you try to update with the wrong zip file. In almost all cases it just exits with an error, rarely it'll write something first that will screw things up. Smiley Sad

So, let's see if we can figure out what you have... Try using that ID number on the support site to see what the model is and which OS it started with.

I found out that it is an A500. I was able to update the OS to 4.0 Ice cream sandwich, but the password lock is still there.

How do I go about performing a factory reset to wipe it all clean?

    Thanks for you help.

OK, we're getting close then. The A500 has four different OS loads for ICS, WW.GEN1, EMEA.DE, EMEA.CUS7 and PA.CUS1. If you bought the tablet in Europe, the Middle East or Asia you are likely one of the EMEA versions (I'd guess .DE is German locale). If US probably PA.CUS1 (I think Pacific Area, Canada & US, but I'm not positive). Everywhere else is likely the generic WW version. You want to download the appropriate version for your tablet and put the update.zip file into the root of an SD card. Don't extract update.zip, other than to extract it from the file you download.

Once you have that ready, boot into recovery mode by pressing and holding the volume key and then press and holod the power button. You'll see some text and perhaps feel a vibrate when it's going into recovery mode and you can release the keys then. Use volume buttons to navigate up and down in the list of options and power to select. Tell it to reinstall the OS from the update.zip and you should be back to the factory defaults in a few minutes.

I did reload the OS from the Update.zip file, thank you for those instructions. It still wants a pasword at start up.

    GRRRR! frustrating!

    Any other tips to try?

Boy, I'm at a loss then, the update.zip thing should have replaced everything back to defaults, but apparently it leaves some configuration stuff alone. You might be able to do something using a USB cable to a PC, then editing or deleting the appropriate files, but I'm guessing that's also not going to be easy. Smiley Sad

Try contacting Acer support to see if they have a fix they can do by sending it to them...

update.zip to 4.0 doesn't erase user data, it's a correct behaviour. Smiley Happy

you need to do a factory reset entering recovery to wipe user data

Thank you, when I follow this process I get

    Erasing userdata

Unrecoverable bootloader error (0x19000006) - in red

This is a fun challange for everyone...

    Thanks
