How to mount an external HD to an Acer a3-a20?

I have an Acer A3-A20 tablet with KitKat 4.4. I have tried to mount my 1tb Seagate external hard drive to it, but was unsuccessful. I have been able to mount USB flash drives of different capacities, however, It does not recognize the hard drive. Can someone give me any advice on this  matter?

Where is the HD getting its power?

Its getting power from the tablet. The led light comes on the HD when I plug it into the tablet.

That's your problem then. The tablet is probably applying enough power to wake the firmware on the drive, but there's no way it'll give enough to actually spin it up. You need an external supply for the drive. Either one directly connected or via a powered USB hub.
