Admittedly the tablet has been dropped.  I have opened it and replaced the battery about a year ago.  It is getting on in years... If I hit it wrong with my finger or something: or pick it up the wrong way... Not sure what causes it.  But I get this symptom.  All of a sudden the video will go to White and Black flipping waving streeks.

Then I shut-it-down, it comes up fine.  This happens everyonce in a while, unpredictably.

I do have the ability to open this device up and do stuff.  Is there something I can do on the inside?  Is there a simple item I can replace, that wouldn't cost a vast amount of money.

Sounds like a loose connection.  You could open it up and make sure the screen connection is seated correctly and locked in.  If that is not a problem look closely around the area of that connection for anything that isn't soldered correctly.

yeah duh...  I'll dig inside it yet again.  I wondered if anyone had experienced this exact same circumstances, so I knew what to look for.  A long time ago I experienced a time where the touch quit working, and it ended up being a connection not seated well.
