Iconia W510 has only 1GB free after returning from repair service, won't update because of that.

I have recently brought my Acer Iconia W510 back from repair service. Their help was needed because the tablet used to freeze so often, that it was not usable anymore, no recovery or refresh helped. After the repair it is back to "normal", but it only has about 1 GB free on disc C (the only disc) and I have nothing on it, because it is just freshly installed. I want to update it now from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, but it wants some Windows updates installed before that, and I can't do that because of the lack of space. Please help!

Fire up Disk Manager and take a look at the actual partitioning. I'm going to bet there's a 10GB Recovery partition at the end of the drive. It's created automatically during the recovery process, but shouldn't be there for the machines that only have a 32GB drive. It's great if you don't have recovery media though, since you can create the recovery disks from it. If you already have the disks then it's usually fairly easy to remove the extra partition and expand the C: drive to recover the room.

Yes, the recovery partition is about 6.5 GB. I tried to delete it via cmd (diskpart) but when I type delete volume, diskpart crashes.

You should delete the partition instead of the volume.

    list disk
    select disk # (probably 0)
    list part
    select part # (probably 3)
    delete part override
    exit

Thank you, now I succeeded in deleting the partition and extending my C drive.

But, the update issue persists - when I go to Windows update and check for new ones, it says - n updates found, m MB total. I click on install all and then it begins to download updates, but the line stays all grey, it makes absolutely no progress and eventually freezes. If i try to click something or go into Task Manager, it shows the blue screen error - last time it was Kernel inpage error, but I believe I have seen several different errors like this lately Smiley Sad

That is probably because the OS (8.1 seems to do ths) expects the recovery partition to be there unless the pointers are changed & just deleting does not change the pointers.

The way I use with a new device is to go into RECOVERY and first make a full disk image (needs a flash drive the same size as the SSD or I can use a external disk drive), next make a recovery disk (I use an 8GB flash) - cannot use the same drive for both because the two must be formatte differently, and then there should be a check box to recover the space used by the recovery drive.

Using this method the pointers in the OS are updated to point locally. Anything else takes an SME.

Note: if there is no checkbox it may be using the new Microsoft method of saving the compressed drivers on a seperate partition. This should not be deleted unless you like bluescreens.
