XG270HU drivers cause color distortion.

When I install the official drivers for my new XG270HU monitor (version 1.0.0.0 from 12/12/2014), severe color distortion appears in all of my photos.  It also causes lots of green dots to appear all throughout the Firefox UI.

Reinstalling the Windows 7 Generic PnP Monitor drivers makes everything work fine again.  I've enclosed pictures of how each driver displays them.  Obviously, I prefer using the drivers specifically designed for my monitor, so is there a way to fix this?

I'm using:

Windows 7 - 64 bit

Acer XG270HU monitor

AMD Sapphire HD 7950 vapor-x video card (3gb GDDR)

This is the only problem with this monitor so far, but it's annoying having to un/reinstall the PnP drivers when I want to view/edit my pictures.

Thanks!

    Steelebourne,

Are you referring to the drivers we have posted on our us.acer.com website for this monitor?

    Steelebourne,

I'll pass a message on to our engineers to research this a little.

    Steelebourne,

    1. Does this issue occur in other browsers?
    2. What driver version of your video card are you currently using? I see there is an AMD Catalyst Package official version V14.12 posted here on the Sapphire site and here on the AMD site.

1 - It only occurs in Firefox.  More graphics are distorted in it than I originally noticed (kind of like the jpg I included in my 1st post), in addition to the green pixels that fill up all the menus.  I've tried uninstalling all of the extensions and addons one at a time, but none of them are causing this problem.  Only returning to the original 2006 Windows PnP Monitor drivers fixes it.

2 - I've been using the latest version of the AMD drivers (v14.12) since they were released.

    Steelebourne,

If this issue only occurs in Firefox and not in another browser I think that might be a Firefox issue or another piece of software.

    1. I've seen posts on Firefox forums about disabling hardware acceleration, you can try that.
    2. Could you test it in another browser, such as Google Chrome or Internet Explorer?
    3. Update your flash player if you haven't in a while. If it's up to date, you can try remove it and try installing it from scratch.

I tried all of your suggestions, and nothing helped.  Chrome and IE work fine so far.  I've also noticed that icons and other graphics in Firefox are also distorted.  Pictures viewed outside the browsers are still terribly distorted while the Acer drivers are active.

    Steelebourne,

    1. Could you explain what happened when you tried to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox?
    • Could you remove and install Firefox again to see if that resolves it?
  • Did you remove Adobe Flash Player and installing it from scratch?
  • Have you tried running the newest drivers for your video card as a clean install rather than an update?

Nothing happened when I disabled the hardware acceleration.  There were no changes to performance at all, positive or negative.

I uninstalled & did clean installs of Firefox, the Flash player, and the video card's drivers.  Still no changes with Firefox or viewing pictures in Windows.

    Steelebourne,

    Thanks for the update.

There is an issue with Firefox software and monitor drivers since it works with other browsers (Chrome & IE) fine using the Acer drivers.

It also sounds like there is an issue with the video card drivers and Acer drivers.

A couple more questions before I can pass this along to our engineers.

    What resolution are you running?

How do you have this monitor connected (HDMI, DP, DVI, etc)?

Have you tried a different video connection type with the Acer drivers to see if the issue persists?

I'm running at 2560x1440.  I've also tried 1920x1080, and still got the same results.

I have the monitor connected with a new DP 1.2 cable I bought for another monitor last month (an Asus 1440p), which worked fine.  I also tried the one included with this monitor.

I've also tried using HDMI cables, both new & the included one.  All four of these cables still give the same color distortion, both online and off.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but I just noticed that the Acer drivers are not digitally signed.  I'm using the ones that I download directly from the Acer website, and I had no problems installing them.

    Steelebourne,

Try doing this and see if it resolves the problem: Disable Signed Driver Enforcement in Windows 8

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), not Windows 8.

I've always been able to install the XG270HU drivers with no problem.  It's just that the signed driver warning appears when I select to install them.  It doesn't try to block the installation at all.  Once installed, it lists them as the monitor's current drivers.

    Steelebourne,

Go ahead and run through that just to see if it makes a difference when installing, I'm curious.

I have the exact same problem as Steelbourne, I have also tried many of the suggetions in this thread and am seeing the same results.

I am using the same monitor drivers from the Acer site.

Problem is only with firefox browser, IE and Chrome is fine.

Everything else, gaming, video etc workes perfect

This is likeley a driver issue as you mentioned.

OK, I just tried that and got the same results - Firefox is still badly distorted, as are all of my offline pictures.  I also just tested some other pic formats (tif, png, gif, & bmp) along with .jpg, and all have the same problems.  So far, all of my games & videos still seem to work fine.

    Steelebourne,

Thanks for the update, let me see what I can do on my end. It sounds like a Firefox compatibility issue with our driver.

It sounds to me like you are possibly using a custom color profile. Not your monitor settings, but some sort of color calibration profile (.icc, or .icm, or something like that). I found that when I calibrated my monitor and saved the resulting color correction file in the ICC v4 format, many pictures colors were distorted or overly dark. Most browsers had problems showing the correct colors as well as windows 7 photo viewer. When I switched saving the .icc file into the v2 format, all the problem pictures correctly showed its colors (no distorted colors or overly dark pictures).

For what its worth, I do not use the acer drivers. They are unsigned and do not install on my windows 8 64-bit system.

I haven't made any changes to the color profiles (at least not that I'm aware of), and I'm really not familiar with any of that.  But I must say, your information about the Windows 7 photo viewer problems was great!  I just tried using a 3rd party one called IrfanView while the Acer drivers were installed, and all the picture files displayed perfectly again.

Firefox still hates the Acer drivers, but at least 1 problem is solved!  Thanks for that  Smiley Happy

    Steelebourne,

We are working on getting some new drivers posted on our support site for this monitor that may resolve your issues, if you want to keep checking.
