How to Unhide Recovery Partition on Switch 10?

I've successfully created the recovery USB stick and now want to unhide and delete the 7GB hidden recovery partition on my Acer Aspire Switch 10 laptop so I can expand the System partition with the space gained.

Has anyone successfully been able to delete that hidden partition and have your machine work correctly?

Thanks!

    dekemstra,

    We have an article here that describes how to do this.

    Hi Acer-Justin;

    The Article you linked me to is factually inaccurate/incorrect - One is not presented with the option to delete the recovery partition on the Switch 10.

    In reality, one should not attempt to Unhide, Delete, Remove or Merge the Hidden Recovery Partition. Doing so will cause Windows 8.1 with Bing to no longer boot up or function properly.

    The root cause is Windows 8.1 with Bing on the Acer Aspire Switch 10 utilizes a technology called "WIM Boot". WIM Boot calls on two image files hidden on that recovery partition during the boot process - if they are not there, the Switch 10 experiences boot failure and is effectively useless.

    The bottom line is:  the 7GB Hidden Recovery Partition is not only for Recovery, it is mandatory for proper operation and therefore cannot be added to the System Partition as additional free space. It is already employed by Windows 8.1 WIM Boot.

    Thanks!

    dekemstra,

    I think you might be confusing our hidden recovery partition with the small partition that the operating system creates itself when loaded on to a unit. The hidden partition that Windows 8 creates is usually around 100MB in size.

    No, Justin, I'm not confusing that 100MB partition at the beginning of the drive, that Windows Operating Systems have been creating since Windows 7 was introduced, with the Hidden Recovery Partition taking up the 7GB beginning at the end of the System Partition to the last sector of the drive... or SSD in the case of the Switch 10.

    Google WIM Boot then talk to somebody in Level 2 Acer Technical Support, Karen was the person I chatted with, to gain an accurate understanding of why it is not possible to Unhide or Delete that 7GB Recovery partition and merge the "free space" with the System Partition to afford one the ability to install patches and/or additional programs to enhance the value of the device.

    Simply put; Windows 8.1 with Bing running in UEFI configuration utilizing WIM Boot is using two multi-gigabyte *.WIM files in that 7GB hidden partition. Remove the partition - disable Windows 8.1 completely.

    dekemstra,

    I did a little research after I posted that response, sorry for the delay, I was having some login issues with the site. You are correct, on units using WIM BOOT it is not possible to remove that hidden partition because the operating system uses files on it. I'll make sure and update that article we have that talks about how to remove it to include it is not possible on units that use WIM BOOT.
