Can't permanently delete emails from my Acer Iconia tablet

Following a recent update (that placed coloured boxes beside each email subject line ) I find that when I delete old emails, they go to Trash as usual -- but when I delete them from Trash, they recycle themselves into my Inbox. I now have more than 130 unwanted emails that I can't get rid of. Ideas?

    Strange issue.

can you try to delete your account from the email application and re-enter your credentials?

then try to delete a single email from the trash box and check if it goes to inbox again.

you can also try a third party email application like K9 mail and check if it works or it's some email server settings conflict:

I thought it was pretty strange, myself. I can try that -- but the added problem is that if I delete emails from trash a few at a time, they appear to stay deleted -- until I do the last few, whe the whole lot re-appears in my Inbox. I'm no techie, but I wonder if another clue is that, when I put a few emails into Trash, and then delete them, the little 'loading' icon just goes circling on and on -- even when all Trash emails apparently have been emptied.

it looks like a sync issue between email client and server, in my opinion the K9 mail client is worth a try to narrow the issue.
