Switchable Graphics problem Aspire E15 E5-551G-T629

Hello, I've got a Aspire E15 E5-551G-T629, and the switchable graphics dont seem to work. I've tried several drivers, googled for hours and tried several methods even had the PC in for service for this and some other things and they said all was OK after the service. However the AMD r7 M265 won't be used no matter what.

Any idea what I can do to make this work? Because currently my pc is running games worse than my 6 year old 400 dollar laptop. (Not that gaming is the main objective here, but I'd like to be able to use the full power of my pc when required)

Cheers in advance

    Marsfjell,

There should be an AMD Catalyst application installed that should allow you to adjust the settings for when the discreet chip installed.

Hey, changing the settings in AMD's catalyst control center does nada for me. I've tried several different drivers and CCC's but nada.

    What can I do?

    Marsfjell,

Do you see something called AMD Enduro™ technology? Here is a decription from AMD's site (below), do you have the ability to adjust the setting for this?

AMD Enduro™ technology automatically turns off the AMD Radeon™ discrete GPU for non-intensive applications to help maximize battery life for more time unplugged, and requires either an AMD A-Series APU or an Intel processor, plus an AMD Radeon™ discrete graphics card and is available on Windows® 7 and Windows 8 Standard and Professional editions. Linux OS supports manual switching which requires restart of X-Server to switch between graphics solutions. With AMD Enduro™ technology, full enablement of all discrete graphics video and display features may not be supported on all systems (e.g. OpenGL applications will run on the integrated GPU or the APU as the case may be). Always check with your system manufacturer for specific mode capabilities and supported technologies.

No, I can't see anything like that anywhere.

Edit:  unless that's the thing that let me switch between power saving, max performance etc, there is nothing. (And these options don't make any difference at all)

    Marsfjell,

Here's what else I would like you to try.

    1. If you have Acer ePower Management installed, go through the settings and make sure everything is set correctly when it comes to both battery and AC power.
    2. Go through the power management settings of Windows itself (different application) and make sure you have the settings set correctly, that includes going into the advanced options of the power option you hoose to make sure something isn't diabled or turned off.

What is the name and version of the installed AMD software so I can see if there something we might be missing on the AMD site about it. I don't believe the notebook is having an issue, I think there is a software setting that is being missed. Figuring out the software that AMD is using and looking into a bit might help us figure this out for you.

    Hi,

I am having the exact same problem as the original poster here. I bought an Aspire V5-561G-6407 three weeks ago, and pretty much specifically for the 2GB dedicated AMD. Some of the games I play were automatically detected and set to high performance as should happen, but one MMO that I play the most will not stay on high performance settings. I have set it to high performance in CCC but that is not working. I have updated the drivers, changed every performance option to maximize, updated the BIOS... everything I can think of. Nothing has worked.

Since updating I now have 14.12 AMD Catalyst Omega Software if that helps.

I'm extremely upset about this since the laptop is brand new and I expressly wanted it for the small amount of gaming that I do. But the 7 year old junky Gateway I replaced with this one runs better. If I had discovered this within the two week period I would have just returned it but now I desperately need a fix since I am stuck with it.

I appreciate any ideas. I'd love it if I could just disable the intel graphics altogether and just use the AMD so I don't have to worry about this with other games too.

    Tribble,

I was able to get my hands on your exact model to look through the settings. As I stated previously, in power options, you will need to make sure that all the AMD and graphics options under the advanced settings are set to maximum performance on both battery and AC power.

As far as it goes for the AMD software, configuring that is something that you are going to have to tweak. In the power section of the software you can manually set indivdual applications to work with the graphics chipset itself. There is also a global options where you can change things globally. There is a lot of settings that you have to do, and I know that you said you've gone through them, but please look again and make sure that you are not missing anything. When I was playing around with this unit it was utilizing the graphics chipset without any problems.

Thanks for your reply, but I have gone through every setting and changed what I could change. Here is what I have done:

    - Changed windows power settings to always be maximum

    - made sure acer epower management was the same

    - changed global settings in Catalyst to always be maximum (including battery on all of those)

    - manually added the games that weren't working and set them to high performance

    - added the games that weren't working to the 3d settings profiles

    - updated the drivers

    - updated the BIOS

...and probably more that I am forgetting, since I have been researching and tweaking settings for three days now. There are some games that it will automatically pick up, but the two games that I play the most (and that are the reason I spent extra money for a dedicated card) will only run off of the Intel.

The most aggravating thing was that when I purchased this computer, I had no idea that it even had two graphics cards. The website only listed the AMD, and my previous laptop only had a dedicated Radeon card so I thought it must be the same. Why would it not list two cards if it had two? So when I had problems initially I didn't realize it was because the game was running off integrated graphics, so I was looking into other things. By the time I discovered it was the laptop itself causing the problems it was too late to return it.

    Tribble,

That's interesting and strange at the same time, if it is working for some games and applications but not all that sounds like a compatibility problem possibly or an in game setting of some kind that points the graphics engine to the dedicated chipset and not the Intel.

I am facing the exact same issues. I bought an acer e5 551g, and nowehere does is allow me to see or configure r7 m265's settings. I have tried installing all the drivers I could find. ( Which I couldnt on the official website as it makes me download catalyst which doesnt help the least bit). Nonetheless when I use acer autodetect software, even there it shows my r6 gpu and not the r7 265 graphics card. Even in windows experience index and other independent software tests, it only tests and recognized the r6 gpu and not the r7 265. Please help me.

    pranilshah11,

The steps I provided in this thread are really the only troubleshooting I can provide, if you haven't went through them. The Catalyst Control is where you have to manually set the dedicated graphics to be used with programs. AMD has FAQ and steps on how to set it up, if you haven't looked through it yet.

i have been experience the exact same problem with my Graphics card , the only way to use my laptop normally, is going into devices administrator and shutting down my card, that is extremely annoying because forced me to use only 256 mb of video instead the 3 gb that mi notebook have.
i already installed the catalyst control tool and the drivers of the graphic card and the power administrator of Acer,
when check the memory ( with the card activated ) seen like 6GB instead of the 3GB that correspond, that provoke a blue screen of dead on my notebook at the few minutes of use ( that is why a most use my laptop with que graphic card disconnected ),i went into BIOS to try to fix the partition memory video problem , but dont see any option to administer the memory.
if some one can help me i will appreciate very very much.

PD sorry sorry for my crappy english

im having the exact same problem as you all have, have done it all to try fix it but it has took so much time and energy i bought an acer with NVIDIA graphics instead, but im wondering if we degrade to windows 8.0 or 8.1 instead of windows 10, maybe it will start working again?
