I'd like an Acer Iconia W510. I need to install Word, and have a USB port to transfer documents.

I'm a freelance reporter on horse shows (for fun, not to earn a living) but trying to keep up to date by typing at home puts me on a ridiculously tight time schedule when I'm trying to get away for the next event. I'm usually staying away from home and it would help a lot if I had my reports at least half-finished before I got home.

I've joined Which for one month (cost £!) to check products, and the W510 is their best buy. But I want to double check its suitablility before I spend £500. I have absolutely no interest in the fun things people buy tablets for, and I don't even care if I don't see the Internet or my email until I'm home.

Ideally I will use a mermory stick to transfer an old file of show results. Normally the same competitors are involved year after year, so I can drag and drop old results around and only have to type a few new names. Then in the evening I can have a go at my report. Then I will transfer it to a memory stick before putting it on the home pc to email to the editor.

According to Which, the W510 will do the job, but I checked with my computer guru, and he advised me to double-check. He sells ad fixes pcs, but has a low opinion of tablets, although he fully understands my needs.

  • Hi,

If you would like to know If you could install MS Office, Yes, that is Absolutely possible with no issues. If the Unit shipped with Word, W510 is a Older model & There are chances the unit will have MS Office as a Package(its better to check with the Product package for the same). Cheers.

You might also find it useful to pick up a bluetooth mouse and keyboard if you don't have them already. Word is usable in a touch environment, but it's much smoother still in the traditional input. I believe they're doing a better job with the next version of Office, but needless to say you don't want to put off your tablet experiences until they get around to releasing that. Smiley Happy

it has a micro usb and micro hdmi ports. you can install "open office" for all your editing needs for free. however, 500 pounds sounds like a lot of money.

I have a W4 and based on it I think the W510 should do exactly what you want and be very handy.  As others have said getting a bluetooth mouse/keyboard will be very helpful especially if you're planning to cut and paste and if you're doing a lot of the work at a motel etc.  Also look at putting the program Touch Mouse Pointer on it (free program) that will give you a virtual touchpad mouse on your screen and works very well (especially for selecting/cut and paste) for when you don't have a BT mouse attached.  The nice part with Windows tablets is you get fully functional versions of Office rather than pared down ones that are missing some functionality (may not be a big bonus for your use case).  I use Dropbox and wifi to transfer files back and forth to my laptop which works well.  If the W510 has a microUSB as one poster said then you will need an adapter cord (relatively cheap) and then it will work well with a standard USB flash drive or even a wired or wireless mouse (rather than a BT mouse).  The other option is using a microSD card if your home computer has an SD card reader (and assuming you have a micro to normal SD adapter).

IMHO people who don't like tablets are either using Android/iOS and are frustrated because they don't get the full functionality, or don't need the functionality/portability and therefore have no use for any tablet.
