The hard drive on my Aspire 5740-6025 went bad and needed replaced. I purchased a new HD and installed using the recovery disks. Everything went fine until it got to the Windows screen that said "Setup is applying system settings." At that point I got a message saying "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware." How can I get the new hard drive to work on my system?

first of all, you need a completly blank HDD, so now you have to wipe it completly.

    download hiren's boot cd:

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

unzip the downloaded file and burn to a CD or USB pen, the .iso file; then boot from the burned media and select mini xp.

once in the desktop, start a command prompt and type:

    diskpart

    list disk

(take note of the HDD number)

    select disk x

(x is the number of your HDD)

    clean

    (wait until it finishes)

    exit

now exit from mini xp and boot with your recovery media

if error appears again, To sort it out do this:
At the first error hit SHIFT F10
    Type -
    Cd..
    Cd..
    Cd c:\windows\system32\oobe
    Msoobe
This should force the installation to continue.
If the error reappears click on OK and let it restart the system, once restarted it should carry on with the installation

The .iso file disk wouldn't work, but I followed the rest of your suggestion (the SHIFT F10, etc.) and that did the trick.  Thanks for you help!
