Vista Repair

I am trying to find a solution to repair a Vista (Home?) installation on an Aspire 5920. The laptop blue screens with a Stop error code 00000F4 when booted in either Normal and Safe Mode. This problem started after installing a program although it may also have a malware/virus problem. The inbuilt Startup Repair and System Restore both fail.

I have the Acer Recovery disks but the Acer eRecovery website suggests that all personal data will be lost if they are used. Is it possible to repair the OS installation from the recovery disks instead of reinstalling it?

Many thanks.

I managed to find a solution that involved copying and pasting older hive files. This has enabled me to get the laptop to reboot into Windows normally without the need to repair or reinstall the operating system. Thank you for your suggestions/assistance, have a good New Year and a great 2015. Many thanks

  • Hi,

Eventhough the Recovery says it would wipe personal data, you have an option to Retain user Data when you use the recovery Discs, which could save the Data to C:\backup, provided application loss is eminent,. Cheers,.

    Hi sathya0403

I was hoping that was the caseSmiley Happy

Please could you explain what you mean by "which could save the Data to C:\backup, provided application loss is eminent"?

Is the option to Retain user Data on the default path through the recovery process or do I have to make specific selections to get to it?

    Many thanks.

  • Thats right, using Retain user data, is the option,. the user data(Pictures, music, documents) will be retained in the above said folder,. Cheers.
