DVD drive no longer detected, hangs on Acer startup screen

Recently my computer (Acer Aspire x1800) began to start up slow, would show the Acer screen (Del setup & F12) and would hang there for about 45 seconds or so before going to the Starting Windows screen... where normally the Acer screen only shows for 3 seconds or so. Never had a problem where it never started, it always loads up and once running it's fine. However I also just noticed that my DVD drive stopped working at times and is never displayed in My Computer, just shows my C drive. Sometimes I can open my DVD drive still, other times it wont open at all. I have all the latest updates and latest BIOS thats posted here for download (it's 2009 however), even used Acer Recovery Management and restored to factory defaults wiping out C drive (have not done a complete Format as I'm scared my DVD rom won't open or run to install windows) as the restoring doesn't ask for CD's. So any idea what could be causing this, is it a motherboard issue? SATA controller? Don't think its the battery as my system clock is fine... any suggestions or diagnostic programs I can run? I checked the Acer website here for diagnostic tools and didn't see any.... thanks in advance.

    Hi there,

you may try this test to scan the whole HW components on the machine.

first I would check in the bios, to see if the dvd drive is showing, if it is then i would say that the dvd settings are incorrect in the registry of windows, microsoft has a utility called "fix it" which does help most of the time as I have experienced this issue before, woth a shot, if the dvd is not showing in the bios settings then check the cable connections if all are seated fine then it could be just the dvd drive is no longer functional, but my thoughts are windows registry as it`s a common problem.
