Can not get A500 to upgrade to ICS

I have a A200 running ICS and my brother gave me an A500 that he did a factory reset on before mailing it to me. It is on 3.2.1 Build Acer_A500_7_024.02_COM_GEN2 When I check for updates it get the "Network coverage is currently poor" Message. The playstore says the Icona TAB Update Enhancement apps is installed. I removed it and installed it again to no avail! It has been two days and no update. This seems to have been occurring for weeks now??? Is there something I am missing on forcing it back to latest firmware? Thanks Chris

    I downloaded the firmware here:

    http://support.moulnisky.com/index.php?dir=Acer/A500/

You open the zip and install the update.zip file within the download on the external Fat32 SD card and boot that into recovery! Vol/Down - power on!

    Android Verizon 4..0.3

    Kernal 2.6.39.4+

    Image verson Acer_AV041_A500RV06RC01_WW_CUS1

    Build Number Acer_AV041_A500.1.041.00WW_CUS1

The A500 is now loading Chrome Browser and you can swipe apps away to kill them, Standard ICS stuff! Start screen is not the same as my A200.

Another thing, I can not find the Iconia TAB Updated app anywhere in the tab even though the Playstore says it is installed? ON Edit: This appears to be just updates to something in the firmware, not an app you see loaded? Chris

Another user has the same problem, we can't find a solution.

the error is not related to your connection but it's a messsage that A500 can't reach acer server, it seems they change server or path to download updates.

Yes, if I check for updates with the A200 I get the same error! When will there be a solution or work around? Chris

I have informed about those issues, we need to wait for an "FOTA" application fix or some updates to download from the Acer website.

Appears there was a patch a few years ago to fix this on 3.1. Here is the video about it at that time. So this problem might be fixed on either end. How do I know that Acer is really working on this. Their CS is really hard to contact!!! Chris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNRUb81oyAk

Well spent a half hour on two levels of support chat, and "no known issue!" They are referring it to the Web support team!!!

So don't do a factory reset or you will be in the same boat!!!!!

Snoking don't worry, they know the issue in HQ, just the support is not already informed.

By the way a solution is not already available.

    Stay tuned

Checked back with Acer this morning, and received this via chat. Anyone know where I can get US 4.0.3 for an A500?

Mary B: I read the case notes and from what service engineering states, the FOTA server was turned off back in March so old tablets that used FOTA to update will not be able to update via FOTA anymore.

So I found what I think in the correct file.  Acer_A500_7.014.16_041.206.01_COM_GEN1

Howevery when I put it on the SB card and boot with vol/down I go into recovery, see the gears turning and end up with tiangle with exclamation mark in it! Suggestions?

I have verified that I do not have zip.zip in the renaming!

Little follow up. The tablet appears to be running fairly well on ICS. It would hang up its WiFi connection if left setting around for hours on HC and that has not changed, and appears to be a radio issue that was not addressed with the new firmware. I use Notifaction Toggle app and can easily go to airplane mode and back to free it up.

Now to teach my wife to use it, as I am going to stay with the A200, which is easier to hold, as the case is not as slippery as the A500 case. Given that they have the same specs and processors, they run about the same, except the A200 ICS has the wheel feature and a couple over home screen things.

When my brother gave this A500 to me, it came with a nice leather case that functions as a stand also which adds weight and bulk, and is to slippery to hold without it. It was a gift from his son who is a MS zillionar, and now has them using MS phones and MS Surfaces.

I tried to download the zip files from that link, but they all seem to be password protected...?

Sorry - I just noticed that the password shows up top the moment you click the link...

In the end, your solution worked - thanks! I wish I had found this earlier. I could have saved myself a lot of time.
