I need a M5 screw!

Hello!

Anyone able to help me with this?

Earlier this week, I attempted to open up my M5-581TG to upgrade the hard drive.  Unfortunately, I found that one of the scres on the underside of the chassis had been damaged (I presume while being repaired by Acer under warranty a while back).  I ended up having to drill the blasted thing out, and of course I'm now a screw down on the normal complement.

It's a black, philips-head screw, about 2mm x 6mm, as far as I can tell.  Screwfix and B&Q (UK DIY shops, for anyone reading this abroad!!) are unable to help me.  Anyone have any idea where I can get a replacement?

All pointers gratefully received.

Cheers

Charlie

The M5 uses these (15 off for case plus 1 off for ODD):

    M2.48 x 6.0

I cannot find these available anywhere! However, you may be able to coax an M2.5 to fit.
A pack of laptop screws (which includes m2.5 x 5 and M2.5 x 8) can be obtained here:

They do claim to supply Acer screws but I couldn't find any this size. It may be worth an email or phone call (they are in Bournemouth).

Sorry, I can't do better than that I'm afraid!

Goodness me, M2.48! That's a special screw. How on earth did you find this out? Many thanks indeed for the info, I'll get in touch with the company you mention. Cheers Charlie
  • Yes, very odd. Less than a thou (in old money) off the standard 2.5mm.
Given common metric thread tolerance, you can hopefully find a 2.5mm that fits OK should they not have this odd 'Friday afternoon' size!

(The info is from the service guide.)

Just to finally close this topic...

I bought e M2.5 6mm screws, and the first one I tried went in just fine.  Many thanks again.
