w500 post

I have n Acer Iconia w500 system. When I power on the unit it makes a long continuous beep noise and windows won't load. However if I depress the volume key (either up or down) the noise the beep stops and windows loads. Being a computer tech, I suspect that the volume key is stuck or possibly broken. I manage to remove the backing of the unit and inspected the volume button but could not see any visible damage. Any clue as to how I can resolve this situation? Almost certain that the unit is no longer under warranty. Or could this be a brick?

update. I removed the back of the system and the mb screes. I noticed that the little white button that the rocker switch on the volume button was stuck. I was able tu unstick the button and now the system boots normally. thanks for the suggestions.

I haven't been inside a W500 but I suspect that the volume rocker is a mechanical switch with the rocker portion acting on the switch portion. Can you check for continuity to verify the switch is acting normally? It likely wouldn't take much lint to cause one side or the other of the switch to stick...

Yes I believe the volume rocker is mechanical. difficult to see since some of the main circuit board is blocking a partial view. I will look at it this evening. What would you suggest to use. compress air to clean the the rocker?

I'd look really, really closely before trying compressed air... Make sure there aren't any little springs or such that could fly away! Otherwise yes, compressed air or possibly a Q-tip and alcohol if there's a bit of grime tht doesn't want to clean off.
