BT error message - Cannot control the device

in 2014 Archives

BT dissapeared from system device and will not turn on. It appears on the Acer Quick Acess however, when I try to run it on it shows the message - "Cannot control the device" and turns back off again. 

My system - i5 , Windows 8.1 Pro

    Sounds to me like you might have installed an app that attempts to take over the bluetooth, but fails in some way. Think about what you've installed lately, or what's been updated.

    I've tried everything and was not able to find any program which could be causing the issue. Is there any other way to identify what is causing it? Thanks.

    Try firing up Device Manager to see what it's saying about the current state of Bluetooth. If it's giving you a question mark or exclamation point then the problem is probably a corrupted driver, if bluetooth isn't shown at all then it may be hardware. Corrupted drivers can be fixed by uninstalling (make sure you check the 'delete files' option) and then reinstalling with the package from the support site.

    It is not showing in the Device Manager at all. The only place that BT appears is clicking on the Acer Quick Acess button and it is always turned off, when I turn it on the error message appears again (Cannot control this device).

    OK, launch Device Manager and select 'Show hidden devices' in the view menu. There should be a Bluetooth section, plus Bluetooth devices listed under Human Interface Devices and Network Adapters. If none of those show up it's a sign that the hardware isn't working (either failed hardware or disconnected hardware), which leads to Acer tech support and their warranty service.

    When I select hidden devices it does show two BT icons (BT and BT Virtual Devices). Great to see some progress :-)

    On both icons, there is no option to update drivers, the only option is to scan for hardware changes (which I did and nothing changed) and under properties there is just the General tab with the BT icon.
