resolution dropped, white background is highlighted pink, dark background is bright green

Several days ago my windows colors have gone awry. The black background (including the pre-splash startup screen) is now a bright green (like an-old fashioned static-filled TV screen), and all the white-background windows are filled with pink. However, full color picture backgrounds display all of the proper colors to the pictures. The problem seem to be simply that windows is displaying pink for white background and green for black background, and the color resolution is also very grainy.

Is this a driver problem, or a hardware problem? I'm out of warranty on this Acer Aspire AO722.

I won't have access to an external monitor to try that out for another few days.

After that, did you change the color setting for testing? Or even change the theme? I would do that first.

If I try to use a color picker, the white squares display as pink.

And yes, I tried picking a base theme, same issue.
I also tried to find any accessibility or contrast settings that were off, but I'm stumped.

Maybe you have accidentally switched on the magnifier application?

Checked it out and no, the Magnifier is not on. I also tried toggling to a High Contrast, and with Color Inversion, but neither solves the problem.

You did not wrote what Windows you are using so it depends on your knowledge to boot into safe mode with VGA driver. Check whether the wrong colors there are too.

Yes, I tried that as well. I booted into VGA (640x480) mode, and I got the same colors within a smaller box in the center of the screen, and the black background was its usual green/black static.

    Windows 7.

I am now able to connect to my external monitor, which displays normally. The problem is isolated to the laptop display screen.
