Aspire E1-572: Second SATA-Device (SDD/HDD) in optical drive bay

Hi,

in my new Aspire E1-572 I tried to install an additional SDD/HDD inside the DVD's drive bay (using a hdd caddy).

Unfortunately, I had not too much luck. The additional device in this bay will sometimes not be recognized/initialized properly:

  • I tried to install the SDD as the primary harddisk behind the cover on the bottom of the notebook and the HDD inside a caddy. Sometimes the notebook hangs at the BIOS splash screen. A soft reboot often resolves the issue and boot up continues. Within Windows7's drive manager the additional drive will be detected - but cannot be formatted. (It takes forever till receiving an error message)
  • The other way round: HDD in the caddy and SDD as primary device. Again, Win7 installation went succesful, although there were 2-3 reboots not working properly (read: System partion from HDD is read, but SDD with Win7 n/a). Not it is not working at all anymore (SDD not available).

The connection of the caddy is properly done.

BIOS-Version: 2.13 (most recent, official one)

Boot-Mode: Legacy (With UEFI Win7 installation gets stuck (not a boot policy thing, though...))

SATA-Mode: AHCI

My question: Anybody out there haveing succesfully an HDD and SDD in operation?

Do you think I can improve my situation with any other BIOS or unlocked/advanced BIOS settings? (e.g. telling the BIOS that there is a second mass storage device and not an ATAPI-CDROM...)
(Version 2.13 does not offe anything useful here)

Thanks for any hints!

Were you ever able to get this working?  I replaced my HDD with an SSD and it works great.  I ordered a generic HDD Caddy to do the same thing you are trying to accomplish.  I have the E1-572P-6403.  It did not come with a DVD drive.  It just had a blank plate but I can see the connections for a SATA device back there.

What HDD Caddy did you purchase to use?  The one I bought is about 3/4inch too short and I"m afraid if I use it, I may never get it out again.

    Thanks,
