hI, I am Michael from Austria, living here in Indonesia. I have a problem, but can not solve without help. On my Acer Aspire 4820TG I had to make a (successfull) recovery, upgraded then with original to Windows 7 Prof and wanted then install Virtual PC because I still have to get Windows XP (all my old mails are on OE6). I could remember that pressing F2 when starting the computer would bring me to BIOS and there I could enable Virtual.Tech. But it is not there. Very grateful for your advice. Michael

I suggest that you instead download and install VMWare's freeware player. I'm running Win98SE, WinXP, and SuSE Linux as virtuals on my Acer AO722 because of legacy hardware and software that don't operate well or at all on the newest Windows OSs. I can run all these virtual OSs at the same time on a single machine and communicate between them thru the network. VMPlayer doesn't mess with the bios. It's a very polished and capable virtual environment  See this wiki description

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware_Player and judge for yourself.

Version 3 or 4 would probably be best for your purposes.

What is the filename of the WinXP installation that you downloaded from Microsoft?

Congratulations! It seems like you have successfully installed a virtual WinXP....not once...but twice!

All you have to do is highlight either of the WinXP installations on the left. Then click open on the right. Then you have to wait a few moments while WinXP loads. You may be asked to set an amount of virtual RAM...250 or 500 MB would be good. Hard drive size...40GB is nice.  The VMWare installation  may also want your machine to be connected to the internet to be able to download code that fine tunes mouse behavior, screen resolution, etc.

Which VMWare Player version did you decide to install?

    Hello Michael:

What procedure did you use to run the WinXP installation exe file from the VMWare player?

No. Don't install again right now. First, let's try look for the first two virtual WinXP installations you tried to do. I think you intalled WinXP twice but VMWare doesn't know where the virtual WinXP operating system files are located.

So open Win7 Explorer. Then search your computer C:\ for  "*.vmdk" but without the quotation marks. This file would be the virtual WinXP operating system files. Make a note of what directory they're located in if Explorer finds them. Report back with your results and we'll proceed to the next step.

I think the problem is that somehow the VM Player does not know what directory the files you found are located that you found with Explorer. I suggest that you open VM Player, click on one of the two WinXP installation. Then edit virtual machine settings. Then click options to see what directory it's now looking for files. You must change that directory to one of the directories you found with explorer. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which one since you apparently tried to install WinXP more than once so you will have multiple directory possibilities. All I can suggest that you try each directory that you found with explorer to see if WinXP will start. If worse comes to worse, we can try to delete to multiple installations and start anew but don't try to delete anything just yet.
