There were a couple of other people who had similar problems with camera availability after the 8.1 upgrade. I don't think I remember a solution posted though. Make sure you have view hidden devices on in Device Manager and if you can find the 5M Cam device uninstall it, then search for devices again. I'd bet that the hardware is still working and all you need to do is get the software synced back up.

There is a flow chart to follow when updating from Windows 8 to 8.1 : http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/update-to-windows81
Many people have had difficulties when upgrading this OS, myself included. I daresay your CAM is there and works just your tablet is software bugged. I would be tempted to reinstall the original OS, update the BIOS and follow the flow chart religiously.
Good luck !

I tried the reset and went back to win 8. now i see the 5m cam listed in device manager (image device) but it is grayed out. I tried uninstalling and reboot but it is still the same. I have not yet tried to upgrade back to win 8.1

I give up. I think i need to send this back to Acer. I do not need this piece of scrap metal in my house. not when there are so many other less "driver plagued" tablets out there.

now after months of trial and error i notice that the rear camera suddenly starts working but only after the tab has been turned off for a few hours. once turned on, both front and rear cameras work perfectly fine but after about three hours the rear cammera starts to flicker then it dissappears from the tablet. that is to say, the panorama and switch camera option is no longer available in the camera app and device manager now shows the 5M Cam as a ghost with a 45 error code. The front camera remains perfectly fine and unaffected. if I wnat to use my rear camera again then i have to turn the system off and leave it for a few hours then turn it back on and both cameras are working again. how do i fix this annoyance??? anyone?

Sounds like it might be heat issues. Experiment with fans blowing directly into those top two heat vents to see if the symptoms get better.
