Upgrading the CPU on Acer Aspire 5720-6497 (Intel core 2 duo T5250)

I would like to know which Intel core 2 duo processors might fit with the Acer Aspire 5720-6497.  I have heard that the T7700 2.4 Ghz is compatible.  I thought that the T9500 might be as well, but now I have doubts.  If there any site you have run across for Acer Aspire 5720 that explicitly lists those processors for which there is compatibility, I would much appreciate your input.

Many thanks,

Yes, T9500 might work but it's a bit expensive and I don't know whether the heatsink is designed to cope with the higher temps, I would try T7700 or a T9300, maximise RAM (4GB) and replace the HDD with a SSD. These are only my suggestions but the choice is yours.

You could try T8100(2.1) or T8300(2.4), both are an evolution of the Merom core that you have: 45nm, 3M L2 cache, 800FSB and dynamic overclock (both jump 200Mhz if OS requires). They are relatively cheap right now. T8300 is an excelent replacement if you don't need the 6M L2 cache of the T9xxx series.

T7xxx series are good too, but they are 65Nm CPU's and lack some of the multimedia instructions introduced in the 45Nm Penryn evolution.

Try an T8300, it will be a good improvement.

CPU power is good for software that really needs it. It will help you during encoding, rendering etc. If you want to see an overall system BOOST, you need an SSD. It will amaze you. SSD plus CDROM caddy HDD is an option.

Don't worry too much about heat, if your laptop doesn't keep folding or rendering for days without pause, you won't have any problems. Good thermal paste and clean radiator is all you need for day to day usage.
