aspire 5551 laptop will not boot stuck on flashing cursor

When the unit boots to a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left, this will normally mean bad
HDD or HDD is not connected.0 -
Sometimes you just need to format the hard drive and then restore the OS. Try this first:
Boot from a bootable CD that has format.exe on it.
If that goes through, then boot off of your restore disks and put the OS back on it. Sometimes when that happens, the MBR is just lost and needs to be re-programmed.
If the format.exe program does not work, then you know that you have a bad hard drive and purchacing another hard drive would be in order. Cheers!
