Does any one know how the **bleep** do I access the Advanced settins in this Laptop model?

The BIOS is InsydeH20 3.7 ver and the model is Aspire E1-522.

Thank you.

  • To which advanced settings are you referring?

I believe all settings are available from the BIOS menu headings.

  • Clearly I owe you an apology!
I really had no idea there was a hidden advanced menu.
Perhaps you would be kind enough to post back with further details when you have found it.

There is no way to access what is not there.  There are no advanced options.

    There is nothing to change.

    NEEDED EXTERNAL DVD...
    BURN MINTLINUX CINNAMON 64BIT
READ ENTIRE DIRECTIONS AND PRINT OFF BEFORE STARTING....
A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF LINUX OR SOMEONE WHO DOES...SUPER USER COMMANDS ARE FOREVER IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU DID OR ARE DOING..

    ENTER BIOS
    1. Disable UEFI Secure Boot
The Secure Boot Setting is present in the BIOS menu (Hit F2 - while booting or via Windows 8's Enter UEFI Setup). But
in order to change it, one has to set a "Supervisor Password" in the Security Tab within BIOS.
    2. Change Boot order so USB CD/DVD is first option
    EXIT BIOS
BOOT LIVE LINUX MINT WITH DVD IN DRIVE (SELF EXPLANATORY)
    3. Boot into linuxmint-cinnamon-DVD-64bit via UEFI
Booting via UEFI is important because the efi runtime service is not accessible when linux was booted "the old way".
SELECT FIRST OPTION...JUST HIT ENTER AT GRUB LOADER SCREEN
    4. System has compatibility issues with graphics SO FIRST SAY NO TO FIRST XSERVER WARNING AND OK TO SECOND..THEN  command line opens after errors type in each command
(EXACTLY..UPPER AND LOWER CASE MATTER AS WELL AS SPACES....ENTER after each line)

    sudo Xorg -configure
    sudo cp /home/mint/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    startx

    Now graphic display will show...
First find connection icon in lower right of screen and connect to network
    (needed to download ghex editor)
    4.Access UEFI via a console/terminal
(A BLACK BOX WITH THIS SYMBOL IN IT     >_     )
LOCATED BOTTOM LEFT...THIRD ICON FROM MENU..
    5. Type in terminal (enter after every line)
    sudo su
    modprobe efivars
    apt-get install ghex
    ghex

    6. Now ghex editor is running in super user state...be careful and if you don't know what your doing...im not responsible..find someone who does..
    UNDER FILE TAB   OPEN
    NAVIGATE TO File System/sys/firmware/efi/efivars/Setup-a04a.............
(Setup-a04a............ I LEFT THE FULL NAME OFF BUT YOU'LL KNOW WHAT FILE IT IS WHEN YOU SCROLL DOWN)
    edit 0X21b and 0X21c
change the 00  to 01 for both

    00000210  00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00  00 00 00 01 01 00 00 00

    7. exit ghex it will ask you to save....must save..
    8. close all windows
    9. HOLD POWER BUTTON UNTIL UNIT SHUTS DOWN...MUST...
    10. UNPLUG USB CD DRIVE OR REMOVE DISK
11.START UP...PRESS F2 TO ENTER BIOS AND YOU'LL SEE ADVANCED MENUS..
    12. BE CAREFUL AND USE AT OWN RISK...RESTORING DEFAULT SETTINGS WILL PROBABLY REMOVE ADVANCED MENUS FROM BIOS...
    THANKS AND ENJOY

Booting into another operating system to edit the configuration data of a shipping system is unsupported.

Any issues that occur as a result of these operations would not be supported under warranty.

I have seen your video, but im not feeling confident enough to mod with linux. Is there anyway you could email a copy of your modded bios? as where us lesser users could just flash the bios without all the modding tools/expertise?

I would be willing to "donate" a few euro for the trouble. PM me! THanks! nice vid btw!

    rate up!

Thanks for the clear walkthrough! Worked like a charm.

Used a USB stick to boot into Linux, took me a whole 5 minutes to complete all the steps Smiley Very Happy

I am now able to install 64 bits guests in VirtualBox.

I can understand why Acer has hidden the advanced BIOS options but wonder why the SVM option is set to disabled?

Is this hack BIOS-version dependent? Is it compatible with version 2.07?

Also, my model is E1-522-4500 unlike the video, does it make a difference?

    Thanks in advance.

    Yup, worked with 2.07.
I may understand why Acer may choose to hide these options from the costumers. I do not understand however why Acer deprives a way of knowledgeable consumers from accessing these in an official way. Even worse, I don't get why Acer choose to not allow users to be able to use the AMD-V which is a feature of the processor they sell and promote with the model.

For all you must only change 0x21B from 00 to 01

If you change other bytes you can damage your PC!

This Change the Bios option "Hidden Menu" from "disable" to "enable".

Now, here is the easy way for enable the "Hidden Page". What you need:

    - Usb-Stick with FAT32

    - InsydeH2o Setup variable modification tool

BE CAREFUL AND USE AT OWN RISK!

    Step 1:

    Copy "BOOTX64.efi" to your "USB:\efi\boot\".

    Step 2:

Restart and enter BIOS Setup. Disable "UEFI Secure Boot" (you must set "Supervisor Password")

    Step 3:

Boot now from your USB-Stick and type following command: setup_var 0x217 0x01

Now you have enable the "Hidden Page" option :-)

    UEFI dump "Hidden Page":

I did also change 0x21C, nothing seems wrong though.
    What is 0x21C?
