Cannot Restore Laptop to Factory Defaults

Hello,

I've run into a problem with my Aspire IV (V7-581P-661) not being able to start up anymore.  After powering up, I get a blue screen that says:

Recovery

Your PC needs to be repaired

The Boot Configuration Data file doesn't contain valid information for an operating system

File: \BCD

Error code: 0x0000098

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media.  If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press Esc for UEFI Firmware Settings

The machine didn't come with any Win8 installation or repair software in flash drive or USB format (there's no optical drive anyway, and even if it did, there's no Windows product key).  I checked the Acer forums for solutions, and tried the tools that are accessed by hitting Alt-F10 during startup.

"Refresh your PC" tells me that "The drive where Windows is installed is locked.  Unlock the drive and try again".  I assume that's done in Windows, but I can't get to Windows.

"Reset your PC" tells me that it's "Unable to reset your PC.  A required drive partition is missing."

"System Restore" and "System Image Recovery" won't work because I never set a system restore point, and there's no system image on the computer.

"Automatic Repair" says "Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC".

I'd be grateful if anyone can suggest a solution that I've missed.

    hi..

As per the information you have priovided I see that you are unable to restore windows 8 on your computer.
The Alt + F10 recovery option is not avaliabel for windows 8.

There is a hidden partition in your computer to create the recovery disc, since it was not created earlier, the only option for you would be to purchase the recovery disc, please backup the data before perfroming recovery

You may purchase it from the Acer store, It will install the Operating System, all the pre-installed Software and the drivers of your system.

If you have a unit from US or Canada, you may also live chat with an Acer technician at : Acer live chat   Acer Store
If you have purchased the computer in any other country, you may contact Acer support here : Acer Global Support

    Hello,

Thank you for the suggestion.  It seems that a recovery flash drive is only available to Americans, but it could be that I haven't looked hard enough.  I'm out of town for the next week, but when I'm back, I'll certainly investigate what options are available for recovery media in Canada.
