After installing win 8.1 the speaers no longer work.  Installed latest realtec driver and it did not fix the problem.

If your sound worked before you upgraded, you may want to roll back to Windows 8, then load the latest audio driver then update to Windows 8.1

This is not an option as I have many applications, data and software to re-install which is worse than not having the speakers.

Go to control panel/look for an audio device and look around to be sure something is not turned off.

Did you go to control panel/device and find audio device and allow it to update driver?  Let it look online for it.  If that doesn't help let it look on your computer.

If nothing else go to device manager and uninstall the driver, reboot and see if it helps.

The system works fine on external speakers and phones.  Device manage shows the realtec device is working properly.  Realtec offers device drive 2.73 which says it is good for Win 8.1.  I installed this driver with no success.  http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
