I bought this computer for speed, so far the performance is awfull, every time I start it up, it goes through the same old, same old, 'Windows update failed, reverting, restart, then it tells me the whole thing again! before eventually allowing me to use the damned thing. I have tried manually updating windows but with the same result, I have tried disabling the fire wall etc with no avail, I am not a happy owner at present, is there anyone who has the knowledge and willing to help in preventing me from throwing this Acer XC600 through the 'window'. Please

    Hi odbob

The problem you're describing is a Windows issue. Something to try:

    1. Press Windows & R & type: services.msc

Scroll down to Windows Update, right click & select Stop.

No go to Computer folder and click the C: drive (usually named Acer), then click on the folder named Windows. Scroll down to the folder called SoftwareDistribution, then open it and delete all content. Restart your computer, then go to Windows Update and let it download all it finds. Hopefully, WIndows updates will now install correctly.

    2. Try the Microsoft Updates Troubleshooter - here

If the above fail, then backup & reinstall Windows - this will definitely fix the issue!

Finlux, thanks for the advice, got as far as software distribution, but it will not let me delete the content.

But, in any case, it seems wrong that I am having to do all this work on a brand new computer, I bought it to help me and not the other way round. Simpler for me to just package it up and return it to Acer as 'not fit for purpose' I am not a wiz kid and have no intension of becoming one, just want a computer that works.

Thanks again though for your help

    Hi odbob!

I still try a format. This isn't an Acer issue, its a Windows one. I have had this same problem at work on HP machines. The first answer I gave worked on those ones....

Finlux, thanks again, I am at this moment refreshing the computer (back to day one) I am using my old computer for this commication. I take your point that it is a windows issue, but Acer sold this computer with windows installed and so if there is a windows problem, then Acer have a responsibility. Most people buy a computer and expect it to work properly, this one doesn't, anyway, if this latest effort works, then fine if not I have no option but to send it back, I really don't want to keep having to delve into the depths of computer tech, I did all that with the commador vic 20 years ago, just want to switch on and use, that surely isn't too much to ask of a modern day computer? thanks again  regards  Robert

Ah, Commodore VIC-20, my first computer too Heart

I understand where you're coming from. Acer "looks after" the hardware side and Microsoft the software!

I hope that the reinstall solves your problems.....

A fresh day, following almost a full day diving into the depths of my XC600, applying all the recommendations offered, trying to rid the problem of windows update failures. it started OK BUT! tried windows update and it failed just as before, tried to speak with Acer but the number on the side of my machine is 'invalid', number being :- [edited for privacy]. I do now believe that the only course of action for me is to return this product as 'not fit for purpose'. if there is a possibility of redeeming this situation then please feel free to advise. Thanks to Finlux for your support

Finlux, thanks for all your kind help, but it's going back!, I bought a total package from Acer, hardware and software. The software didn't work properly, and so it was not fit for purpose. Sad really, it has put me right off Acer, I will now go for a different make, and just in case it was windows8 at fault, I think I'll buy a bear bones pc and add a different OS system. But look, thanks again for your support, wish you well
