Veriton L460 won't boot

Hi all, I have just gotten an L460 and I can get into the BIOS setting, the HDD powers up, the memory works, the fans work, the CD works. I can load a CD to start installing an OS but after it goes through it's thing it just locks up.

If I try to load a HDD from another system it locks up, I have taken out the ram and just used 1 chip, (which I know works) and still it does the same.

There IS a BIOS update but it is a windows only type and I cannot load windows so, no go. I have been using 2.5" Laptop drives, one is 80gb and the other 500gb, the system KNOWS they are there and dispalys the sizes but as soon as it tries to load the HDD, it just locks up. Does anyone have an idea please? Smiley Happy

    Hi Pendaws

Have you tried replacing the Sata cable or using a different onboard socket?

I have tried removing the SATA cable and using one I KNOW works plus, the DVD, when it worked, would allow an OS to start it's install and then freeze like the HDD does.

As to the onboard socket, there is ONLY one for a single HDD and the flat ribbon cable for the DVD.

The HD light comes on when trying to boot and I can actually feel the platter move and then it gets to starting, the 4 little coloured windows come into view and then the computer locks up. The DVD thing happens with a USB/Flash drive as well. All I can think of is the board maybe stuffed. Smiley Sad

Any more help would be appreciated. Thanks Finlux for your suggestion. Smiley Happy

It kinda sounds to me as if the motherboard or the HDD may be faulty. The other HDD you tried from another machine - was it blank or did it have  Windows on it? If it did have Windows on it, it would be unlikely to work due to compatibility issues between different machines.

Have you tried to do a fresh install of Windows on a newly formatted drive?

Not yet but I should be able to get the USB flash drive to do it's thing but it just won't.

When the DVD worked I tried to load a WIN os disk and same thing, it would start expanding files and then just give up and lock the machine. Smiley Sad

I am going to use a new HDD and see if I can get it to do it's thing, thanks. Smiley Happy

I put a clean 500GB hdd in the machine and tried to install Win7 via Flash Drive but, same again. It gets through the basic start and then, when the four coloured windows start, it freezes. Maybe the Pwr Supply is not working so good?

Thanks for help Finlux. Smiley Happy

It's worth swapping out the PSU. Faulty ones have been known to cause all sorts of problems!

If a different supply makes no difference, then it can only be the motherboard.....

Thanks for all your advice but, it appears it must be the MB or at least a part of it, maybe the BIOS chip?

    Ah! What a shame!

You could try your local PC dealer - he may well be able to repair, or replace the motherboard.
